I'm planning to buy a dfi x38 mobo and it saying the mobo's pcb is 6 layer thickness.... Now my ??? is, normally how many layer a mobo has

DFI is known pretty well for its thin boards in the lower price range, the higher price range guys usually dont complain about it though. If your really concerned go to a comp shop and ask to have a look at it, that will answer your question alot better then just reading about it.

Most mother boards today are 6 layer, same as the board that ram memory is on.
DFI makes good enthusiast boards.
Don't get all excited by the board layers, but if a manufacturer specs less than 6, steer clear of that board.

Do not confuse physical thickness with the number of layers in a PCB.

I am not an engineer, but based on a lot of years in the field, I suspect that it would be impossible to build even a low performance motherboard (by today's standards) using less than a 6 layer PCB. Eight layers would be better, but you need to factor in production costs.

What happens is that each layer does something different. One layer will carry power. One or two layers will be used as ground planes for grounding and shielding. The rest will be used for busses and signals.

Any board needs a certain amount of thickness if only for the stiffness to withstand the insertion of memory while installed in a case.
