My mb is a 24 pin I have a psu that is a 460w but it only has a 20 pi. Could I get a molex to 4pin to get that extra power it was meant to have

you don't want to use a molex to 4pin unless you are absolutely sure about the pin out, otherwise you are risking frying your motherboard, there are many different 4pin.

base on your scenario, if you are just running a igpu from the cpu.

you can use 20pin to 24 pin adapter. that will probably work okay.

if you are running a pcie graphic card that draws more than 30~40w (like gtx 750/1050, 1030 should be okay) of the motherboard as well, i don't recommended and would suggest you to buy a new psu.
reason being the added 4pin are related to 12v power delivery, you will ended up drawing too much off the 12v wire (20pin has 1 12 v wire, 24 pin has 2 12v wire.

System specks and before you say anything it’s for running old games that 10 doesn’t support

Athlon x2 64 3600+
Gtx 550 ti needs single 6pin
2x hdd
1 case fan
1 DVD player
Original psu 305w no gpu 6pin would need an adapter but I think 300 isn’t enough so I have a 460w I was thinking of popping in as a replacement

New PSU is the smart option.

The current one is either too old and or VERY LOW quality if it doesn't have a 24 Pin main power connection.

The ATX12V spec has changed over time, with the 2.0 spec specifying 24 pins,, which include additional +5 and +3.3 ijn the 24 pins. +12V power was increased, R/T changes in delivery for PCIE and other power draw changes, while +3.3 and +5 were reduced.

There were many other changes between ATX12V 1.3 and 2.0. A proper power supply is recommended for what your motherboard supports.
