Modded Skyrim Lag issues with a good pc

Hey everyone,

Recently I've started to get back into skyrim and I have been more installing graphical mods as a result of my new pc upgrade. However, to my disappointment, I am unable to run Skyrim with 50-60 fps constantly with my pc. Additionally, even when I am able to run it between 50-60 fps it isn't just a little minor lag, the game actually stops and freezes for a second. Essentially my question is is that, is my skyrim (and mods eg. enb, noble skyrim 2k) running poorly with a fair pc because it is simply un-optimized or is there something wrong with my pc? I'd also like to note that I was forced to uninstall some 2k texture mods in order to reduce lag but after not playing for a few days I ended up installing the mods again and I was running at a slightly better fps? Also, I find it very strange that people on youtube who upload showcases of their graphics mods for skyrim have the same specs for a pc as i do yet are able to reach a consistent 60fps - why is this so? Finally, If at all possible (and suggested as a solution), could someone correctly explain to me how to properly configure .ini files such as enblocal, SKSE.ini, Skyrim/Prefs.ini and the enb in general and how to properly setup the SKSE memory patch so I can ensure ive done it correctly - this is as Many people have simply said "setup ini files correctly" however, I have extremely minimal knowledge on any of these things and all attempts prior to this post have resulted poorly as i am merely trying to enjoy skyrim however this has really been ruining my experience.

I would be very appreciative if I am able to get some help as this has been an ongoing issue for multiple years now and I still cannot find a solution.

PC SPECS:

Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 4gb GDDR5 = 16GB of RAM GDDR3= Intel Core i7-4770 - 3.40GH = 1TB Hard drive x3.

The issue is not with you pc, is with Skyrim's very old engine (the Creation Kit) which is 32 bit which cannot allocate as much ram as it is necessary (this creates crashes, some bugs etc.). Also the papyrus script engine is not very robus to say the least (the physics in vanilla Skyrim are extremely limited in terms of scale and effects). This engine was modified heavily and also used in Fallout 4 (albeit 64-bit). I also recently modded skyrim (before the Special Edition was even announced) with ~200 mods including RealVision ENB and after a lot of tweaking I had around 45 fps outside and 60fps indoors. The game is very laggy outside and the load time between areas takes quite a while (probabl I should have installed it on my ssd).
I have an i7 6700k, 16gb 3000mhz DDR4 , MSI Gaming R9 390 so comparable to your specs. However, those enb's especially are more optimised for Nvidia gpu's so it should run better on your system (assuming you have a similar mod configuration).

I suggest waiting for some mods to be ported to Skyrim Special Edition (especially SKSE as many mods depend on it) and try to mod that version of SKyrim. I think it will be much more stable given they used the 64 bit engine they modified for Fallout 4.

What do you think the chances of SKSE being ported to skyrim s.e? Also, how much of an impact would an SSD have on the games performance, and why are people still able to run 60fps constantly with the same pc specs as i have?

You are welcome! SKSE will definetely be ported for Skyrim Special Edition, however I don't know how soon it will be finalized. An SSD will not affect framerate, but will reduce load times significantly (and Skyrim has a lot of loading screens), especially consireding the extra strain texture mods will put on resource loading(also because of the ram limit with the non-special edition Skyrim a lot of things need to be moved back and forth from RAM to hdd/ssd ). I am sure such people do not have the same mod configuration as you and have edited some ini settings to optimize the game (with such mods, optimization depends partly on the mod developer and yourself).

Hard to say, depends a lot on the mod configuration. Sometimes in moded Skyrim even with the most powerful hardware you can't keep a steady 60 fps because of the limitations the engine imposes on these mods. It is quite difficult to choose the right mods in the right combination while maintaining performance. I say try your luck with the Special Edition. Good luck!
