If i were to take my motorola, now know as an arris, surfboard sbg6580, and had it hooked up to a TP-LINK TL-WR940N, would i still be able to use the modem capabilities of the sbg?
On the modem/router, you'll have to turn OFF all the router functions. Use it as a bridge.
Then, everything connects to the new router. Wired and WiFi.

Shouldn't be an issue - you'll just need to put the modem into bridging mode.
modem router has one of the most despicable UI, and house needs better wifi, so was gonna go with that.
ISP->modem/router->home
ISP->modem/router->router->home
also if connected to the modem, would i be able to connect to the tp-link? i am asking this because just found out that the tp-link has only 4 10/100 mbps instead of gigabit, so the sbg has gigabit.
