modem shuts down often

wireless router hooked to modem. router works fine, but my modem keeps shutting down. what causes this and how can it be fixed

Most likely the power supply. If you own the modem you may just have to buy a new one. If you are renting it from the internet provider, open a service request for a new one.

agreed. if rented look at the modem and see what the power requirments are for input and see what the output is on the power supply. I had many customers with issues with their modem to find out the tech who installed it just pulled the first power cord that fit and didn't look at power ratings and either under powered the modem or over powered it
