Question Modern gamming on a lap top is simply not possible due to overheating, was this statement true or false?

So when I tried to play a modern game on my lap top which had all the stats to play it and overly well I found I could probably fry an egg on said lap top.

I later read a comment online that it was not viable to use a laptop for modern gamming modern shooters etc because of over heating and because competitive play requires a big screen a desktop basically

What are the stats of the modern era ?

Xbox X

Custom AMD 8-core Zen 2 Series X: 3.8 GHz, 3.6 GHz with SMT Series S: 3.6 GHz, 3.4 GHz with SMT

So the latest stuff isnt too demanding in terms of how far the technology has gone vs how much the consoles are holding it back?

Id say its almost archaic that level of machine was available like 10 years ago?, makes purchases cheap tho

Definitely not worth buying anything good or expensive, the amount of low cost yet relatively high quality stuff out there is ridiculous

U just sh*rt away 500 or 1000 on what becomes the trash pile in a few years, then the consoles hold it back more than ever anyway

Lap tops should be like bags of chips/phones, thats how u get your moneys worth, keep throwing away old ones , I didnt realize my laptop was worth so little, been hauling it around like it was baby Jesus

So what's the problem? Did it run well enough for you to enjoy playing it?
Laptops getting hot is nothing new, PCs get hot as well, if go and touch a CPU while gaming you gonna burn yourself.
You can introduce vsync or just cut it off at some FPS (like 60) so it keeps cooler, or get a good cooling base.
And don't game with the laptop on a shaggy carpet or your bed sheets or something.

You can't compare xbox/playstation with a regular PC.

xbox is ONE configuration.
Devs can tune the game performance and graphics to that one single config.

PC's are literally a billion different combinations. And do multiple things at the same time.

This is true. Laptops are a lot more efficient than desktops. But laptops have to be more efficient because they have to remove a TREMENDOUS amount of heat in a much smaller package and preserve battery life.

Even at 35W, you can burn your hand holding the heat sink if fans are off. Some laptops try to expel over 100W of heat at peak load. I use my Intel 12 series laptop to keep my coffee mug warm.

This is why you'll never see a laptop close to the performance of a true high end desktop.

Now ALL that said, YES you can use a laptop for competitive modern shooters. As long as it's something like Rainbow Six, COD, MW, ForteNight, Halo, etc.... But it will get toasty and won't be as competitive as a desktop.

It's really not an apples to apples comparison. The memory subsystem is set up differently. And if you try to use it for everyday task, it will run considerably slower due to memory latency.

There is also the issue of folks buying the wrong laptop for the task. Gaming.

Consumer (typical) laptops are not designed with heavy, sustained high load usage. iGPUs are poor substitutes for dedicated GPUs, but that means costs (money, heating, power)..

If you want a more robust laptop, you get a purpose designed gaming or workstation class device. Costs more, but can do more too.
