Hello to all. I just bought a Gigabyte p35-DS4 motherboard. I looked at the motherboard and it has a molex conector next to the 24 pin PSU connector.

Do i need to connect power to that even though i plug the 24 pin and 8 pin power?

How would I know if I need to add more power.

If this has been answered I am sorry, I searched but did not find anything.
Thank you once again for the response and knowledge.

Read the Manual.......

On page 25 of the manual will tell you what to do....

Thats why they ship them with the boards... and if you "lost" it or didn't come with one it is available online...

If you cant read dont put your own computer together... buy a Dell.....

Please read before you post..

having a bad day?
he was just asking and he was polite, so what's your problem?

@ the OP
this is straight from the manual (in case you dont have it):

• The motherboard provides a PCIE_12V power connector, which can supply
extra power to the onboard PCI Express x16 slots. When you install
two graphics cards, connect the power cable from your power supply to
this connector.

so it is only required if you are running a crossfire setup

wow, sorry to bother you

a simple "yep, check page 25 on the manual" would be more than enough.

I guess you have enough time to type all that. And if it pissed you off I am glad. And thank you for the referral,

exarrkun, yes thank you, I downloaded the manual from the web site. Just went though it to page 25 and yes, there it was. Funny thing I missed that page on the manual at home...:(:D

hey now I know, so hopefully if someone asks the same question I will be able to help them.

One more technical question, if the PSU has 2 PCI-e connectors, and you use them both for 2 video cards. Do you still need to give that extra power?

Thats only if you are running 2 X2900s in crossfire. If you are running just one card it wont hurt to have it unpluged or pluged. If it was me, I would leave it unpluged. If i ran in to problems, then I would plug it in.

Its like the 4/8 pins, it will work fine with 4 pin, But if you are overclocking or have a high end CPU then 8 pin the board..

I didnt want to sound mean, but come on that is why they make manuals... Now the second question was not covered in the manual.....I was off my Medication:)

Yep thanx for the reply. Makes sense I guess. I do have the 8-pin for example and will use it as I will add the Q6600 to it and might do some small OC.

But the question not covered on the manual if to use that molex if the PSU has 2 PCI is something to look into.

I think the Molex is used if you have 2X 6 pins PCI-X and not the 6 pin and the 8 pin PCI-X, the newer cards use a 6 and 8 pin. If you have 2 6 pins you can use the molex to supply more power to the card without having to buy a new PSU. or a 8 pin adapter...

Splendid

The 8800GTX (well, at least the one that I have) has 2 6-pin connectors on the card itself. I'd be amazed to think you'd have to give that mobo additional power too for even a somewhat power thirsty single card. I know this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, but my dinky Striker Extreme does not have a 4-pin molex on it (that I recall) and pushes the 8800GTX along fine.

So it won't hurt if you connect the molex to the motherboard, even tho you have both cards plugged with the pci connectors. I guess the BIOS takes over if needed....
