Momentary Vandal Switch Purpose

How does adding an expensive vandal switch to your case protect it? I've heard it's a good idea to add one if you plan on going to LAN parties, but I'm not understanding how it helps protect your computer. Isn't it the same as pressing a normal power button?

Expensive part removed.
On next boot, it informs you that the case has been opened. If it wasn't 'you', then there was a vandal.

Wait am I just completely off then? I thought you use vandal switches to replace your power and reset switch?

Oh, I was thinking of something completely different.

A vandal switch is merely a tough switch, designed to prevent people from breaking it.
