The main difference between XBOX360 and Playstation3
in my point of view, is that
XB doesnt let you make you own software for it!

It has to be Microsoft approved software
and signed with 2048 bit private key that Microsoft gave you,
beacouse CPU in the XBOX doesnt play any unsigned code.

With Playstation3 you WILL can start Linux and ALL its applications,
as well as custom made software of other type. (Your own software)

Therefore, PS3 is much more useful as the all-around machine and console
so that, you can do with it some other every-day things, besides playing games.
And Blu-Ray player, of course.

It is a question of Freedom that users have, choosing the game console.
I dont want Microsoft to take my freedom of choosing software away
by putting Software selector for Microsoft-approved-only software
Inside Hardware itself.

This planet will be pretty pittyfull place if we let microsoft
make Both Hardware and Software for us.
And choose for Us which software we should use and wich one we cant.

If i had to choose i would know it for sure! 😀

PS3 all the way, because of the features. And till now sony always delivered good products (ps1 an 2)

I totaly agree for the reason why i dont need a PS3, ok i also have to say I ain't even got an xbox, PS2, or any of that kind.
Witchever reason 1 and 2 confirm it totaly for me.

Yes, the PS3 is probaly better then the most media center pc's on the market today (exeptions like that barebone with SLI)
but i also beleve that will change very soon once vista appears on the official market.

about the blu-ray, oh cool the PS3 comes with blu-ray.....
I'm sure it also soon be mounted in our pc's.
will we ever have use for it?
or how long will it take to burn one of those ..... on x4 speed?
We shall see....

I know I'll never gonna get a console anywaybecause i like to play on my PC not on my TV.

Sony's Phil Harrison says the PlayStation 3 is more than just a gaming console. It's a computer, he says, and as a result, "we do not need the PC." Come again? This statement may have shocked a few gamers. Granted, he issued the comment to a German newspaper, so perhaps something was lost in translation. But just in case it wasn't, here are ten reasons why you don't need a PS3.

Its the cost of these consoles, plain and simple, that stops me from buying them whilst they're new. I need a pc for home office, work, and for fun and a console does not have the user friendliness level right to be all of those things to me.

Until that day comes--if ever--I'm only interested in them as a secondary entertainment for home enjoyment and then they have to be affordable for me to even consider them then too (pending budgetary constraints at home  ).

I'll just stick with the home Xbox that I got for nothing with my mobile phone; its fine for when the pc breaks down.

The main reasons that will shift me between two chices:
1. Buying PS3 and Large SATA HD and DVDRW for it
and
2. Buying Cheap Dual-Core PC with the same elements

are:

1 - the real-worl speed of the Cell chip in everyday Linux desktop
applications precompiled for Cell
2 - Am I being able to EXPAND PS3s 256+256MB of memory
to, let me say, 256+1GB/2Gb of memory
for my everyday desktop needs.

So the reason that will be the reason
for me to buy PS3 is

1. MEMORY EXPANSION SLOT FOR CPU MEMORY inside SP3
2. Great C compiler and ported Linux distribution to PS3

And of course Speed/price comparison between Dual-core PC
and PS3 Cell CPU.

- 105 million units of the PS2 have been sold worldwide. On release, there will be only 100,000 PS3 units in Japan and 400,000 in the US. That's less than half of a percent.

- The PS2 continues to outsell the XBox360. The XBox360 has sold approximately 10 million units worldwide.

- Next year, there will be 4 viable gaming platforms. The XBox360, PS2 (see above), PS3, Wii, and the PC. The PC and XBox360 are virtually the same platform (DirectX machines).

If you are a game developer, which system would you develop for?

Answer: The most prolific one... the PS2... and then you "port-up" for the PC/XBox360 so you can have a simultaneous cross-platform release. The vast majority of new PS3 games are going to be "up-ports" of PS2/XBox360 games. In other words, the same game, but probably with higher texture resolutions (only noticeable if you have an HD TV).

- For the money, the PS2 ($130) is still your best bet. The PS2 has older top-tier games that sell for $19.95 and new ones are $40.

- "You don't even know what Blu-ray is, and you don't have enough money leftover from your gaming purchases to buy that HD television."

This is a good point! What good is a HD player if you don't have an HD TV (most of the world doesn't).

I can't believe that there are actually people that think that PS3 (or any console for that matter) will replace PC. Unbelievable.

Look, console is just a different beast. It lives in the living room, where there is no good place to put keyboard/mouse. Especially if you have HDTV, you want to watch your HD movies and playing console games sitting in the nice chair, and where do you put mouse+keyboard there?? No matter how many connection ports are for the mouse and keyboard in console for web browsing, you need a TABLE to put your mouse+keyboard, which is NOT living room.

So for around 600$ one can buy Wii AND cheap computer with monitor. The computer will allow you to have all those browsing and editing much better than PS3. And you will have two devices instead of one, so two people can use them at the same time.

So, I think it is just hilarious to say something like replacing PC with PS3. PS3 is what it is suppose to be - game console, and as it is it may be good, but it is REALLY expensive.

Plus, for majority of people Blue Ray is something that they are not ready to pay their money for, just because HDTV is not in each household. And even if it is, the quality of simple DVD will satisfy many users for quite many years to come. After that, the HD players will be so cheap, that you would not even think to mention that console supports Blue Ray as well. If you need a player, you just by stand-along unit (like we do today with DVD players)

with that hot T.G.I.Friday's waitress whom you think is flirting with you.

OMFG! I was just at a T.G.I. Friday's a few weeks ago and my waitress was hot and I thought she was flirting with Me!  I think they do that just to get a bigger tip. I was even half expecting to see her phone number on the back of the credit card payment receipt.

And reason # 1, that's me. The newest console I have is NES. Why should I buy a conslole if I can play those games just fine on my PC. Well, since less and less games have PC versions and (or because) apparently consoles have better specs (CPU, RAM, GPU) then the newest PC's (which also thwarts emulation devlopment  ), I might have to reconsider that.

Whole PS3 costs less then a single modern Graphics card for PC!

This is simply price/performance issue.
When Price/performance shifts to the PC side,
you can Always re-sell your PS3 for a Very good price.

In the meantime I will only regret
if I can`t easily Expand memory on my PS3 to 1GB/2GB or more,
for my Linux applications.
(Linux Runs on PS3 with all applications: Browsers, programming tools, Open Office etc, etc..)
:)

You gotta be kidding. The only graphics cards that cost near or more than a PS3 are the ones with 512 and 1 GB of memory. I'm no expert but since (I don't think) any game even has a reccommended requirement of 256 MB of memory, you'd be wasting your money. I think those really expensive cards are more for video editing and doing special effects for TV and movies and stuff like that. I suppose 1 day they'll be games that can utilize 512 and 1GB of video ram. But not anytime soon.

Thank you for your answer.
You are right and I am also right.

We still compare Whole price for PS3 with price for the price of
only a Graphics card for PC.

Again as I said, price performance issue is the most important
but my opinion is that I could live just fine
with PS3 as desktop linux machine for a year or two
(more if i can expand memory).

After all, PC should always be there and will be much more powerfull
in a year or so to migrate to.
Now I think that PS3 is great solution for home user.

Btw, PS3 have 256+266=512Mb ram AND Blue-ray AND HD And 3Ghz CPU etc..
