Monitor and GPU dead?

I was playing a game the other night when all of a sudden my monitor went black. If I unplug and plug it back in I get 1 second of picture and then black again. The screen isn't entirely black though, if I shine a light on it I can still see my desktop. This issue is pretty well documented on my monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 2494 HM).

What happened next is where I come to my worse problem. I plugged in an old monitor to use while I fix/replace the monitor and it worked fine for about an hour then froze and crashed. Now I cant get any picture coming out of my GPU (MSI 970)on either monitor. When I boot up the fans spin and the logos light up fine but no matter what I get a no signal message on my monitors. I still can use the pc by removing the GPU and using dedicated graphics but that will only help with light tasks.

Any ideas on what happened here and why these two components have conspired against me?

Reading that i point it to memory. The system in my sig had a similar problem. 1 of the 3 Vengeance ram was flaky and wasn't causing BSODs but random shutodowns and sometimes nothing on boot , just fans spinning and no signal. I found the faulty memory (When i first installed it was all good- but slowly slowly) and replaced it with another i had from a pack of 4 - for triple channel. Problem fixed for me, hope its as simple and not a motherboard/cpu/psu. The monitor might be just a coincidence.
