monitor blank and vertical horizontal lines

hello..i am having a problem with my pc. my monitor on startup goes blank and sometimes shows weird colored horizontal and vertical lines when connected to my cpu. i have a samsung syncmaster B2030 monitor, i have used it as a external monitor to my laptop and it is working fine ..no problems at all. But when i connect it to my cpu it gives the same problem of blank screen and the colored vertical and horizontal lines. I have a gpu nvidia geforce 460 gtx and i have sometimes tried to remove it and clean it and sometimes the monitor starts working again..but after a few days it gives the same problem. Is my video card spoiled? or what is the problem because my monitor definitely is fine

Are you using an analog conection between the VGA and the monitor? If so, please check the cable, try moving it around and see if it has any effect on the image. What you described looks very much like a cable issue.

iam using a vga cable . i have a dvi port on my video card.so i use the dvi to vga converter for the connection. my monitor has a dvi port too..should i buy a dvi cable so i dont need the converter? ..is there a problem with the converter? because when i connect the vga cable to my laptop then the monitor works fine.please help

It could be the converter, or it could be the cable. Vga cable problems are pretty tricky, they sometimes only occur incertain positions of the cable. If your monitor has a DVI port, it is better to use that one.
