i recently got a dvi male to hdmi female adapter, i got to plug it in to use it and the display just flickers on and off. how do i fix this

From my experience with adapters, they always give me some trouble, which monitor do you have by the way? A model number would be helpful.

Is the adapter active or passive? A single piece with no cable, or a 2-part adapter connected by a cable?
