Question Monitor displays vertical lines

My monitor was displaying vertical lines and messed up colors after a thunderstorm when I came home today. Interestingly my keyboard lights were on but the PC was off. I replaced the surge protector and everything seems to be working properly now. Does anyone think I have damaged my GPU or monitor, or can a faulty power strip cause these kinds of problems. I am thinking of investing in a 1500VA UPC, opinions?

The vertical lines on your display can come from a dying or partially dead GPU. If it's corrupt drivers that can be dealt with but a dying GPU will be a hefty replacement, to add a faulty PSU will also cause the issue you've stated since the lack of power/insufficient power to the GPU can cause the vertical lines to appear(artifacting).

I've noticed that the vertical lines only come when starting the PC and after the monitor warms up the problem subsides.
