Question monitor help

I have an Hp Windows 10 laptop quite old. It has always worked fine when attached to an external monitor via docking station. Recently the laptop starts fine but the display appears on the laptop screen not the external monitor.
Occasionally it does start with the display on the external monitor. After a while the display reverts to the laptop screen and I hear 2 intermittent beeps.
The laptop works fine otherwise no beeps or errors
I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this.
Laptop does not display or detect second monitor

It sounds like the laptop is not seated correctly on the docking station.

1. Bad docking station
or
2. Bad connection on the laptop for the docking station

I have a w10 laptop quite old but working well until now
It is docked to an external monitor
Recently the laptop does not recognize the second monitor
I hear one beep followed by 3 short ones If I am correct the beeps would suggest a video card problem?
I was wondering if it woul be advisable to update the video driver
It starts fine I do not want to make it worse if by updating the driver I loose the video completely
Any suggestion is appreciated
