Monitor out of range

My laptop screen is broken so I've been using a monitor via VGA. It's been working fine until this morning whereby I'm getting an out of range message upon startup. I've plugged the laptop into an HD tv and changed the resolution to the lowest possible and changed the refresh rate to lowest possible (60 htz) but it still not able to get the monitor to work. It's now just black although it's on and working correctly. Not sure if when I unplug from tv the resolution and display settings are reverting back. Any ideas?

Hi, I have an HP laptop that's screen is broken. I've been using a monitor instead for years. Upon startup this morning the monitor is displaying the out of range message. I've since tried to start in safe mode boot options whilst plugged into an HD tv but as the display is broken I can't see what key to enter to get into safe mode and the TV screen is blank.
