Monitor + PS3 = awful image quality?

So I tried hooking up my PS3 that has been catching dust for a while with my 24" SAMSUNG S24D300HS monitor.

The image quality is terrible and I wonder why?

I used an HDMI cable.

- The video output settings on my PS3 are set to 1080P.
- Cross color reduction filter is turned off.
- Deep color output is turned off.
- Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White is turned on.
- RGB Full Range is set to: limited.

Now here's the weird thing.
The PS3 Menu looks fine. Same goes for the PS store.
When I go to my monitor settings, it tells me stuff like which channel is being displayed, the refresh rate, and the image quality (1080P, 720P etc.)

So when I'm in the XMB menu, or in the PS store, it says:

HDMI 67.5kHz 60Hz NN
1920x1080

But when I start playing Red Dead: Redemption it suddenly changes to:

HDMI 44.9kHz 60Hz NN
1280x720

What is causing this?

Solution
What do you mean by looked great? It's possible that the PS3 looks more washed out than the Xbox 360, correct? This is a problem with the scaler the PS is using, select 720p in the system settings, otherwise it'll scale to 1080p internally, that might be what's causing it.

I had thought about that aswell, however, the only in-game display settings it offers are:

- Brightness
- Contrast
- Saturation
- Multiplayer Overhead Icons
- Kill Effect
- Subtitles
- Show Map
and Show Waypoint.

sorry for the confusion but settings was the wrong word to use in this case i meant settings as in that is what the game is programmed in. like if a game says it can only display in 720P and not 1080P. a console game normally will not have any display settings to change things like resolution because you can only set those in the PS3 system settings.

well so I grabbed the case of the game and on the back of it it does say 720P... but how does this look so bad?
I remember playing Red Dead Redemption on a 40" TV which was hooked to my 360... it looked so great... and this... I can't even play it, the refresh rate is terrible, and the quality makes me question my life.

computer monitors are normally better with picture quality compared to a TV so it may just be the graphics are just good enough for a TV and not a computer monitor. or it could be the graphics are bad with that game. i would check reviews of the game and see what they said about the graphic quality of that game

Found out that the 360 has a built in upscaler, which explains why it looked better on TV.
So in other words, on the PS3 RDR is unplayable, for me at least.

Yeah I did that, and it still looks bad on a FHD monitor.

Well, a TV will always look better than a monitor in terms of picture quality. There's so much processing happening in a TV. However, it shouldn't change output whenever you start the game, that's something broken with the console or maybe the monitor. If you select 1080p in the system, it's internally upscaling everything to that resolution, upscaling is very bad, especially on a monitor, which is why I thought that outputting 720p would look better.

So I either have to buy a TV or wait for the time when consoles/games can fully support 1080p...
That would take a long time considering it's already 2016, and 1080p is a thing of the past with 4k resolutions becoming more and more common with each day... such a shame.
