The resolution on 1 of my monitors is at 1024x768 and i cant change it to 1080 which is the native resolution for this monitor. I says generic non-pnp monitor. All my driver are up to date. I used my pc for 2 hours earlier and then turned it off, when i came back an hour later it was like this. my monitor is a acer k242hl connected through hdmi directly from my gpu.

If you have an nvidia card, right click the desktop and open nvidia control panel. Then click "Change Resolution." You should have the option of changing the resolution to anything higher than what it currently is(which is actually the lowest option for me) all the way up to full 1080p.
Hope this helps!

Go into Control Panel -> System -> Displays -> and make sure your monitor is listed there with the right model number.

Another option is to right click the desktop, select Screen Resolution, and then click the Detect button.

In addition, make sure the HDMI cable is firmly attached on both ends.

For a custom resolution, there is the option to allow it even if it is higher than the monitor. For example, I just ran my 1080p display in 1440p and ran unigine valley at 1440p.
Simply check the box next to "Enable resolutions not exposed by the display"
