i'm not sure what video you watched, but in this one they absolutely did compare the two (plus gsync vs vsync) and they absolutely used the same setup. this was already demo'd to people at a live event where they could turn it on and off and see the difference themselves. considering there are several reviews out there and obviously more to come (toms hardware, anandtech, guru3d) and all thoughts on g-sync since it was first shown back in october have been overwhelmingly positive and calling it a game changer, i think you should reconsider your unwarranted skepticism.

AMD's cards were supposed to be $400/$550. You now get them for $500/600, so no difference. Neither company can control people ripping you off on new tech, get over it. You want to complain, take it up with Falcon NW, Digital Storm etc...Expect the kit (for DIY) to be $100 just like NV said. This isn't NV mark up, it's retail mark up by a few companies realizing they have you by the ....PS4's went for $1000-1500 on ebay etc at launch. Is Sony evil for selling a $1000-1500 console? NO, some guy on Ebay is evil for buying a console he has no intention of using at all, and instead plans to hawk it on ebay to xmas users who didn't pre-order 5 months ago and need an xmas gift for their kid. One of the sites selling the mod is already out of stock so many want it even at extortion prices (just like every new gadget that is in short supply). Don't complain about 1st adopter pricing.

Yeh so like I said ridiculous price that thwarts innovative technology ... don't care who controls the channels. If Nvidia or AMD makes a product and doesn't care if it's overpriced I won't be buying it. Maybe somebodyspecial can get a good deal on it .... just sayin. Personall I think Nvidia and AMD have a huge emphasis on how their products are priced. Some overpricing will occur yes but overall in the majority if you want your product to be adopted into new tech ..... make it affordable

If this worked with 500 series cards I'd be interested. But since we're being left out I'll be waiting for a new card before a new monitor with this feature.

If enough people file complaints with their attorney generals they'll get investigated and the price will magically drop.

Don't forget, your card (whatever you have) is probably one resolution bump away for 30-60fps...LOL. Or even if not, you're likely an engine update or two away (unreal 4 engine, cryengine 4 etc) from that same 30-60fps even at the same res as game engines keep upping what you need at any res while adding more effects. A game that came out with the first incarnation of Unreal 3 Engine is nowhere near as graphically intensive as TODAY's unreal 3 engine games. Star Citizen will likely be more taxing than Crysis3 (as another example) which are both based on cryengine.

If you're running 100fps in unreal 3 today, I'm guessing you'll be hitting 60fps in unreal 4 in a year or two. So magically, gsync makes your card live longer for years. Also 100fps etc doesn't mean you have NO stutter/lag/tearing etc with vsync. It just means it's a bit better, NOT GONE. Even Gsync doesn't totally remove it because OTHER things also affect it which Gsync then highlights. You are just removing the vid card from the equation, which solves MOST of it but if you have a weak link you'll expose it now. Like a lacking CPU etc will now show its colors.

Another note, it doesn't work with all games (yet?). Not sure if it will eventually or not, or how long that list is. I don't really care (and it will likely change as they work out the kinks) until I have a maxwell card.

120/144hz will only lesson gsync showing up some it won't solve problems for users lacking gsync. Only sites like Anandtech (AMD lovers) will claim this (at least to some degree) as a nullifying situation until AMD gets a similar tech, then they'll switch and extoll its virtues...LOL.

cats_paw - No, it depends on what you're doing IN the monitor. In this case it RESOLVES issues, and doesn't add to them. This tells the monitor to LISTEN to the GPU instead of the GPU listening to the monitor, so to speak. I don't mind sticking something in the monitor that tells it quit dictating crap to the rest of us 😉

So like most AMD products, this is strictly for people with plenty of money :C
/sarcasm
Nobody is getting AMD 290/290x cards for $400/550 now right? Check toms Dec 2013 current vid card recommendations where they come right out and tell you AMD can't control pricing once it hits retail (they can charge whatever somebody is willing to pay). Leave all the products on the shelf and you'll get your price cut. Like a Vita etc. Prices drop if you don't buy them :) People on ebay sold PS4 for $1500 a few weeks ago because some moron was buying it for that.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html
"This month, AMD's Radeon R9 280X, 290, and 290X are almost completely missing in action. As the demand purportedly generated by Litecoin miners outstrips supply, prices on those cards are up by as much as 25%, and AMD says online vendors are responsible."

Buy NV until this stops as you get 3 AAA games, Gsync, less noise, heat , watts, OC out of the box without throttling blah blah...Even a NON-REF card at current AMD pricing wouldn't change this for me at the moment. Mantle support is a guess and at best 20% perf according to a SINGLE dev comment and AMD had a whole APU conference to say more if there was anything BETTER to say. If I want that perf I can just buy a model or two up and it affects ANY game forever, not just the ones optimized for mantle. Gsync will also affect me for years and get more important as engines or rising resolutions slow down whatever card I own with no need for DEV help as it just works. Mantle OTOH has to be written for specifically and currently ONLY on AMD, and even then ONLY on a small portion of AMD which currently is out of stock...ROFL. Worse, their Mantle wagon is currently hitched to the worst Engine on the planet (Frostbite 3 which EA seems to want to cram every title into even if it doesn't fit for that purpose-cost cutting losers) from the #1 rated WORST company in America for 2yrs running and currently the first game is the worst seller in the series. BF4 sales off 70% from BF3 - so word is out, the game is ONLY fun when it works...ROFL. Raise your hand if you like EA :) I see no hands.

Mantle will die as soon as devs start getting the bill for coding (the second AMD stops writing checks to devs for support for the API). Mantle perf has only been mentioned by ONE game developer person (a single employee) and it was only 20% you MIGHT get, so likely between 10-15 normally. It's telling AMD said they wouldn't bother for 5%. If it was much higher you'd say "we wouldn't bother with Mantle for 20%" and I see nobody spouting percentages and even the 20% guy shows a lack of confidence in his own statement. He didn't say you'd get that all the time, just that it wasn't an "unreasonable" expectation if optimized properly...So not a glowing performance expectation then right?

Gsync is the game changer here, while Mantle is a pipe dream currently and not a very good one at that. If the company I hate makes a great product I buy it, not complain about it (like the Intel chip I currently have and will buy again at 14nm even though I'd rather buy AMD - That's just foolish today no matter how much I like them, sold them for 8 years to customers etc). I buy the winner (which is the guy with the best technology IMHO), and you should too.

Right tech=Gsync=depends on NOBODY else.
Wrong tech=Mantle=depends on EVERYBODY else to write for it.

Right tech=Gsync=Sells more products (monitors get a boost surely, as we see from extortion happening currently), getting OTHER companies profits on higher margin products. It also helps ME the gamer in 3-4 ways making my experience better. Lag, Jutter, Tearing, Stutter.

Wrong tech=Mantle=EVERYONE PAYS more in coding time/resources splitting up already bad resources and asking them to do more work (do the BF4 guys really need another API to support when they can't get the game to work for a TON of people?). Nobody makes a DIME from helping AMD get this going. It COSTS money. Makes you NONE. You can't charge a premium to AMD lovers for the same game right? It makes you NOTHING. Bad tech. It only serves to make AMD money. I can get what this offers with a new card, and no need for DEVS to do more work for free (it costs them nothing to ignore Mantle, only costs if you USE it and AMD isn't writing a check to you).

I can't really see how anyone could complain about Gsync no matter who owns the tech or how its implemented. If you want AMD to have tech like this, tell them to quit wasting money on crap like Mantle and Consoles. Neither of which help us on PC's much unless someone is willing to lose money on Mantle, and in the case of consoles someone takes the time to make a PROPER port on anything coming from them (which of course NEVER happens). How many times have you seen "WOW DUDE, THAT'S A GREAT PORT OF A CONSOLE GAME". Never, right?

AMD appears to be ignoring what I need as a gamer. Better products (cpu/gpu), better drivers, and a better experience (kill stutter, lag, tearing etc). It's OK to look out for yourself (mantle, gsync etc), just make sure it in some way does something for me too, because....wait for it...I am your customer. If they hadn't spent on consoles would we be waiting for a PHASE 2 driver fix? Would we have ever needed PHASE 1 to begin with?...LOL. Would AMD have lost the CPU race and admitted to giving up vs. Intel (means no R&D cash, since it went to a console right?)? Would AMD have put out such a shoddy product launch with their Hawaii gpu? How much does a little R&D on your cooling solution set you back? Clearly consoles stole all my great reasons to buy AMD. Quit kissing your own butt and start kissing mine. Without me, and millions like me, you get no cash. I'd tell EA (AMD's buddy?) the exact same thing. The gamer's wallets are creating the FOOD on your dinner table. You won't eat without us right? Quit trying to corner the market (consoles move, Mantle etc) and start trying to corner my buying habits with GREAT stuff I desire.

I see mantle as taking AWAY resources that would be spent on making things better in a game for all of us. Instead it asks devs to waste time enhancing features that 90% of us may never see (more than that? Considering how many MANTLE cards are shipping?). I'd rather have ALL resources dedicated to making a better game, rather than making a game run a LITTLE better on a FEW pieces of hardware. If Mantle required nothing from devs and just worked with a great driver I'd be all for it. This is exactly why I want consoles dead. Their development resources would come back to PC's then and improve PC gaming. Instead we get devs making 3 ports for consoles (with special coding done for EACH one, all keying on lacking platforms), a PC version, Mac etc. Kill consoles and we get PC/Mac (which run with the same gpus).

That won't work. The monitor ALREADY modded is only $100 more which is basically the cost of the 768MB memory, PCB, engineering, Altera chip included, etc. The $299 they are charging to MOD your monitor is $100+$200 labor. I can charge you $1500 to put the same thing in and you will NEVER be able to sue me. Your only option is to not buy my completely overpriced BS labor costs. You can't sue for how much I think my time is worth, only for me price fixing with everyone on the cost of the product. You couldn't even sue NV for asking $500 for that little mod card. It's their right to charge whatever they want for the device. Again, lawsuits can only happen with fixing amongst multiple competitors. The initial price is whatever company X decides to charge. It's an evil price these retails are charging, but NV didn't set it, just like AMD didn't set $500/600 for 290/290x, retailers saw LTC mining and decided they could make a quick buck on you for a month or two.

For Nvidia's part though, they are attempting to reduce cost, so whiners need to put a sock in it:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/g-sync-v-sync-monitor,3699-2.html
"As mentioned, Nvidia is working to make G-Sync compatible with what it currently refers to as 3D LightBoost (and will be called something else soon). It's also trying to bring the module's cost down to make G-Sync more accessible."

So the are at least trying to get it to work with other things (yet more costly R&D), and also lowering prices. Cost will come down once you're not tossing the old scaler anyway. $100 is already cheap when you consider we have had a 3-4 pronged problem (tearing, stutter, lag, jutter) that has lasted forever, but is put to bed with one little pcb now. Not bad. NEW BETTER tech isn't free. Unless you want tech companies to make nothing (like AMD), and NEVER make a new product again with the profits they usually get from the last one, you should not complain. More affluent people buy the cool stuff first, so the poor people can buy it later for less. You should be thanking the 1st adopters who are rich enough to get semi-screwed on your behalf 😉

Who said they don't care about price? What do you think an MSRP is? The second it gets delivered to Amazon etc, THEY PRICE IT. There is a reason it's called MSRP (manufacturer SUGGESTED retail price). The retail joint has total control after it once fedex etc drops it on their doorstep. NV/AMD etc would LIKE them to charge X for their product. But they can't stop Buy.com etc from charging X x 50 and shafting us all.

What do I have to do with any of this? I have no special deals with AMD or NV that change this story, and didn't even when I had a PC business for 8 years...LOL. They sell it to my distributor, I stand in line with other PC stores to buy a bunch then sell them to customers for whatever I think I can get for them. No surprises there. Everyone else did the same thing.

So what are you "just sayin"?

They made it affordable. $100 for the card. Someone else added $200 install fee to it (wait for the DIY sales to start if you don't like $200 in labor). Not NV's problem. They made a SUGGESTED retail price, and retail people decided NV was wrong...LOL. I'm quite sure if NV thought EVERYONE would sell their gsync card for $300, they would be charging $250 for it themselves from the get go, but like a decent company they made it affordable for $100 (less when integrated without the need for the tossed scaler in the monitor already). I doubt that does much more than cover the Altera chip, 768MB memory, the PCB, the R&D, advertising, shipping to any monitor maker etc etc...$100 is very reasonable and personally I expected a much larger fee on top.

Maybe you should get a better job so the idea of spending $100 for one of the greatest gaming tech's to come along in years, doesn't break your bank account...Just sayin 😉

If NV's profits magically shoot up to 1.5Billion vs. the ~500mil they make now, OK maybe they charged a bit much for the card. But again, they charge what they think the market will bare. When we don't buy Vita they lower the price. This is the same for everything. OTOH, when they can't make enough after lowering it, the product just dies. So be careful you don't wish for prices that put AMD/NV etc out of business (AMD isn't charging enough, hence years of losses - 6Billion over the last 10 years says I'm right - CHARGE MORE AMD!). I want more innovation funded by profits, not less. NV needs to charge more too, or we won't get maxwell's successor, T6 etc, crappy drivers will come etc. No innovation, worse support and crappy products is what you get when company X is losing their butts like AMD (notice all the driver problems, super hot/noisy cards, CPU race totally lost etc).

Also NV isn't doing much better than AMD at ~3/5 of the profits they had in 2007. They are not making nearly what they did in 2007 and haven't since. You wonder why cards were delayed a year? Why did Hawaii come 8 months after 780/titan and barely catch them? NO R&D because AMD is BROKE and has been for 5yrs. Why is Phase 2 late (when phase1 NOR phase 2 should have ever been needed)? NO R&D funding. AMD is broke. Why is AMD stock at basically JUNK BOND status, and nearly a penny stock today? You end up there when you lose your butt for 10yrs.

Is apple overcharging you? OF COURSE. But is AMD or NV? Heck no. Apple makes 40B, NV makes 500mil, AMD makes NOTHING. Intel makes 12B. Samsung makes 30B+. What part of this do you not get? If anyone is screwing us, it's the ones making a TON of money yearly, not poor little AMD/NV.
