I have a P4 2.6 Ghz with an intel d845pebt2 mother board with a
gainward Ti4200 video card. If I power the system completly down and
then power it back up the monitor(Sony G420) will not power up.
Windows Xp appears to start normally(hard drive spins, keyboard lights
flash etc. I have also tried a different monitor with the same
results. The only way I can get the monitor to power up to unplug
power the the system and then reset the bios backup battery. This
can't be a windows problem because I can never see the bios boot
screen or anything.

Your motherboard battery could be dead. I would try changing that first,
before looking at more expensive solutions 🙂 These days it is most likely
a CR2032.

Hope this helps

It sounds like your board wont POST, I have a similar problem if my computer
over heats and automatically shuts down once every blue moon. It could be
the bios battery although it could simply a bios setting you change, you
could be drawing to much power out of the psu and not leaving enough for the
board to boot.

Thanks for your help and I have some more information,

the computer was completly booting up because I could still access my
shared network files from another system on my LAN. However after
doing some more trouble shooting the monitor will not power up at all
now. This problem started off intermitent and is now constant. The
system also will not boot now but I believe that it is now stuck at
the bios reset screen which is not visible.

I am just trying to determine if the video card or the motherboard is
failing. At first it seems like the video card, but then why would it
start working after reseting the motherboard bios?

Thanks
