I might be looking for a monitor in the near future and really don't have any idea what to look for with them. I of course want to get the best bang for your buck. I'm not really looking to spend $400 on a monitor but would consider anything below that within reason. I have a Samsung 22in one now that I like but might have to upgrade to a new one soon. I would like to get a 24in and up with of course with a good picture quality.

From my understanding of things it appears somethings to look out for is a low MS rating and a high Ghz rating.

EDIT: The computer is going to be a gaming computer. I'm not going to go crazy with the settings or anything as far as resolution is concerned but like anyone I would like to have a nice clear, clean picture. I mainly play FPS games and also will be running Total War: Rome 2 on this comp for the most part. Those and games like Far Cry 4 and future top tier games. No 4K gaming for me. I will most likely be playing at 1080p for the most part.

EDIT 2:I want a nice smooth online FPS gaming experience above all else. The rest is secondary. I just prefer it when compared to the newest ones like BF4 for some reason.

What are some good suggestions with this?

Gotcha. The computer is going to be a gaming computer.

I'm not sure which kind of Samsung I have but I've had it for about 6 years or so. I just know it's a 22" and forget the rest. I'll have to look at it when I get home tonight.

I'm not looking to really setup up more than one monitor, I just one to stick with one but would like to have a pretty nice one.

Hmm, yeah I saw that LG one this morning while looking at monitors. I figured I might take advantage of the good deal on it now but not really sure how LG stacks up to the other monitors out there. I would love to have a 27"

What do the "high-rate gaming (144Hz)" monitors have over the other monitors like the LG in the first link? I do not know a lot about this stuff. I noticed the ms rate is lower on the gaming monitors. I just want a nice clear picture with which it won't put my computer under heavy load. I do not need an insane resolution or anything.

If you like beauty, IPS is the way to go. In my personal opinion, this monitor is the best bang for the buck currently :

The 16:10 resolution makes a big difference. The aspect ratio is superior for MOBA and RTS, as there is more vertical screen display. Having multiple monitors over the years, I personally can't go back from IPS or 16:10. TN simply doesn't look as good, and 16:9 gives noticeably less vertical real estate. 27" screens are TOO BIG for me, being as I sit close to the screen.

Keep in mind I play competitive online games, so a 27" might be fine for RPG type games or similar. But for twitch shooters or moba type games seeing more of the screen at the same time is better. By the time I look from one side of a 27" to another, I lose a split second. In competitive play that split second can cost you.

Great to know as I didn't think about that in regards to gaming. I mainly play FPS's online competitively and didn't think about going too big screwing up my game play. That is for sure something I'm going to take into account. And that seems like a great monitor to me but never thought of Dell as a great supplier of monitors. It would be great to know what are some other good options are based on this typed of thinking. I want a nice smooth online FPS gaming experience above all else. The rest is secondary. I actually play Enemy Territory mostly online. Yes, it is a very old game, ha. I just prefer it when compared to the newest ones like BF4 for some reason.

I will most likely be playing at 1080p for the most part.

Alright, I did some digging and it looks like the ASUS one you posted looks like a good one. Are there any rivals to that one that might be a bit better in the same size? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313

I really don't need the built in speakers either as I already have a klipsch 2.1 system:http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-Certified-Computer-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1422652123&sr=8-2&keywords=klipsch+speakers

Asus also makes g-Synch monitors that synch frame rates with the GPU - all reviews says that adds a lot to smoothness. It adds about $200 to the price of the monitor.

In March, the AMD equivalent - FreeSync - will become available and it is royalty-free, a certified standard, and available on more platforms, so it may become a serious contender. Of course the Nvidia one is proprietary and some royalties (costs) go to Nvidia.

Apart from that I don't really know what you are asking - I thought the monitor I linked you was within your price range. What exactly do you want more than that? Nobody I know use built-in speakers. They sound like crap.

You nailed as far as what I am looking for so no worries there. I was just seeing if there were any other options out there for monitors on that level. It looks like that ASUS model has been out for quite some time and was wondering if there was anything newer. I have no clue about that g-synch though, I will have to read up on that.

But yeah, 24" seems like the perfect size given all the things I know now and would love to have that 1ms with 144Hz. It seems like a great buy. Plus, I"m not going to spend over 400 dollars on a monitor and I really can't find any other rivals myself other than the Ben Q offering. I would get the ASUS over the Ben Q one though.

The only other thing that I would go for would be that g-synch on a 24" monitor but I can't seem to find any ASUS ones that offer that. It looks like you have to step up to a 27" one to get that feature.

FYI, LG Makes more IPS panels than anyone i'm pretty sure. They supply dell, and many others with panels. From there basically Dell adds their electronics, logo, etc. Dell comes with a better warranty than most if you are in the USA. 1080p is fine but it's inferior to 1900x1200. Just one opinion 😉

Well I'm pretty much sold on the ASUS 24" one in the above links.....this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313
I know I want to get a 24" for sure now and I know that I want to get a 1ms monitor with 144 Hz. That is as far as I've gotten with the monitor process. I still have to figure out with the whole IPS vs. TN thing is.

AND it appears I may need to get a new monitor sooner than I thought. I don't know if this is a monitor problem I'm having on my current old setup but my Samsung keeps freezing on me causing the screen to either freeze on the current screen that I'm on or turning completely grey or blue (not blue screen of death) with no text on it; they are just solid colored blocks of color. I have no clue if that is a video card problem or monitor problem. At any rate, it looks like I may be placing an order on one tonight. I might have to make a new thread on this.

IPS gives better viewing angles. For instance, I have one IPS and one TN monitor. If I stand up and view the monitors from above, the color is washed out iin the TN panel while the IPS gives accurate color still. However, IPS monitors rarely can refresh faster than 5ms.

The viewing angles are not an issue for gamers, especially not on a 24inch display. It gets an issue if you work with color-accurate images or sit very close to a large (27-inch or bigger) monitor. Which you should not do unless the resolution is way higher than 1920x1080.

I would look at the GPU, since nothing in the monitor would, in my opinion, account for freezing or transient color changes.

Got it, I figured that was pretty much the difference the TN vs ISP monitors. I know exactly what you are talking about the color wash out at different angels since that is what my current Samsung does now. It is a pain with not getting a good picture qaulity from different angels but I've put up with it for this long so I may just stick with the TN setup to retain the fast refresh rate.

I have learned a lot about this stuff over yesterday and today. Thanks so much for all the help on all of this.

I will also put together the new computer and see if the problem persists to make sure it is the old GPU giving the problems.
