They confirm alot of what we already knew, but I wonder if ATI IS really surprised by the 16X part that may take the performance crown. So a quick R450/480 spin in the near future?
Will PS2.0 vs PS 3.0 matter to many?
I'm a little dissapointed I have to say.
IF ATI can get their part to market long enough before nV gets their NV40 out of NDA, then it might not be too bad. But if the cards arrive nearly the same time, and the NV40 can post some good early benchies, that will kill the demand for the R420 (And likely R423). No matter what your feelings are about the R3XX series, this is a whole new trial, and all new money.
Right now nV is winning the 'chatter' war. On paper it seems pretty simple. PS/VS 3.0 > PS2.0/VS3.0 ; 16pipes>12pipes ; 600mhz > 500mhz.
Of course this doesn't tell the whole story and current line would lead one to believe that the FXs should be better too 32bit&PS2.X+ > 24bit&PS2.0 ; and 450-475mhz > 325mhz-412mhz ; and ~500mhz memory > ~ 350mhz memory, if you didn't experience them for yourself. ATI can only hope that nV hasn't improved it's efficiency to parity. They would/will find themselves at a great disadvanatge otherwise.
Sure would be nice to have something more concrete though. We sure have waited long enough.
I'll be skiing over the next few days, so if anything does happen over the weekend, I'll probably miss it until I get back.
