More pipelines, or faster speed?

Its a matter of profficency...
Sure, to some degree. The architecture plays in too, so it's not totally cut and dry. GF6800U with a 400 MHz core does well against X800XT at 500 MHz core. (That's a bad example as it has mem clocked 100 MHz more.) Say 6800GT vs. X800XL to be closer. Even to a small degree, the R9800 pro slightly edged out an OC'ed 9700 pro running identical speeds as I recall from 9800 pro launch previews.

I'm not seeing any examples in VGA like say a 1.8GHz A64 3000+ vs. a 3.0GHz Intel. That's another story.

I'm with ya. Forget this new talk., it goes over my head to imagine the possibilities. I just want a good ole 32-pipe card with a 512-bit memory bus, clocked say 800 core/1800 mem. Is that to much to wish for?

SIZE is what matters  [/Uncalled for]

ASUS P5WD2 Premium

SuperPI 25secs

Don't forget about the ROPs like was mentioned.

It doesn't matter as much over all but for simple single texture stuff it has a bit of an impact.

I'd say that the GF6800 benifts more from the 256bit memory most, but the ROP advanatage would rank around the 256MB size advanatage IMO, makes it's presence known once in a while.

man it was much easier getting a card 3 years ago.

can someone just suggest a card that is worth getting right now? $200, $300, $400, $500. i am sure that quite a few of you have gotten a card that you know was worth getting. Links would be great.

With all that information, may I suggest to you a graphics card then...

~$200: 12 Pipeline Radeon X800

~$250 - $300: X800 XL/ 6800 GT

~$350: X800 XT

~$400 Geforce 7800 GTX 256mb

~$500 wouldn't bother. Maybe a 512 meg 7800 GTX?

great thanks for info. 400 bucks it is then. any suggestion on the manufacturer? Abit, Leadtech, connect3d, albatron, MSI, etc?

What kind of interface do you have on your MoBo?

GF7800GT is PCIe and the best for ~$400, for AGP it'd be the X850XTPE.

Might almost be worth buying the eVGA GF7800GT just to help with the upgrade to a PCIe MoBo which is free with the purchase.

I was thinking the same thing. In AGP, X850XTpe has been as low as $350, or a better value, X800XTpe as low as $250 NEW! Currently there is a new Sapphire X800XTpe for $280 at Zipzoomfly. In PCI-e the dropping prices of the GTX make it very appealing.

Edit: I should add, these cheap X800XTpe deals make me feel that ATI will have something new in AGP, not just PCI-e. Why else would they be dropping prices on the best AGP cards money can buy instead of dropping prices on PCI-e variants? Just to make noise? Either that, or they just need some cash.

Yeah, I wonder about that, because I've seen alot of other people getting rid of their X800/850 AGP stock. Especially the Connect3Ds here in Canada.

IF they launch the AGP card at the same time as the PCIe that would be one heck of a feat. Although I still think the AGP people should just go out and buy a new MoBo MoFo!
