Question More ram than Manufacturers recommendation

I have a Toshiba Portege Laptop Model Z30TB.
Now The Manufacturers Recommended Maximum Memory is 16gb.
I have 16gb Installed ( 2x8gb ).
This Laptop was Made about 3 Years Ago.
Would I be right in guessing that At That Time 8gb was the maximum available ( per chip ).
I have discovered I can buy 16gb in one chip.
So my question is Will it work with 32gb installed ( 2x16gb ).
Toshiba's answer is ( No more that 16gb ).
It's a big gamble on Buying The Two 16gb chips only to find it won't work and I have simply wasted my money.

Its not a mater of the RAM density when it was made.
The laptops motherboard will only support up to 16GB of RAM (if it had 4 slots the processor supports up to 32, but it does not)
