Damn, turning off music will help? That's good to know. Only problem now
is I won't be able to tell when there's a monster near me until I get
attacked. I usually depend on hearing the music change as the best
indicator that danger is near. May have to enchant up some Detect Animal
gear just to keep my Spider-Sense active...

There's any number of quests which can be ruined the same way. I had the
problem my first time through doing the quest for Azura, where you have to
kill a bunch of daedra and take a ring off of one of them to prove that
Sheogorath has been meddling. I'm not sure if I never saw the ring or what,
but I somehow neglected to collect it and it ruined the quest. (Since
Azura's temple and the island where the quest takes place are on opposite
ends of the world, I wasn't in a hurry to get back there, so I didn't find
out until MUCH later that it was screwed.) Frankly, I can't comprehend how
anybody could stand to play the console versions of this game. If I didn't
have access to the console, I'd just go nuts. The number of times I've HAD
to use it, either because of stuff like that, or more simple stuff like
getting trapped in the geometry, etc., I can't imagine what it would be like
to play without it.

Only MUSIC, not SOUND as such.

How are the devices attached? I use USB mouse and keyboard, *no* radio
version but with plain cables, the mouse is optical. With these, i
didn't experience what you are talking of; and the framerate is way
higher than 30, even at 1280x960, and with shadows in middle position.

The USB is version 2.0, but an input device can be only *that* fast.
The OS is WinXP SP2, and my character has reached lvl 10, which isn't
much. But I think, there should be no mouse reaction lag.

Ah, that's it. My Maxtor 6B300S0 is on S-ATA, also 7200 RPM, but the
different interface might explain the faster loading. Do you already
have a S-ATA connection on your board? It might be worth a try, to
attach a "Morrowind dedicated" hard disk there.

I do, in fact. I didn't use it when I first put together the machine
because I basically just used the drives from my old machine. It's also
possible that the drive it's on may be getting a little full. Not sure how
much scratch space you need for MW, but this drive has... hmm... 4.31GB
available, which SHOULD be enough. Though it's probably not good that
Windows is running on the same drive. Only possible issue, as I don't know
much about these new S-ATA drives yet... If I buy a S-ATA drive, does it
require BOTH the S-ATA connection and an IDE slot? Because I've already got
1 more drive than I have slots for. (Windows and MW both are on a 10GB, but
I have a 70GB and a 60GB drive also installed, plus the CD drive and a Zip
Drive I'm currently not using due to lack of IDE slots.)

True, but by the time you hear the SOUND of a monster attacking you, you've
already been smacked in the back of the neck by a Cliff Racer. The music
changes as soon as the Cliff Racer sees you and decides to attack you, so
you have a bit of advanced notice when you're in danger, giving you a chance
to shoot it out of the air instead of swinging wildly trying to hit it with
a melee weapon. (For some reason those damn things are almost impossible to
hit when they get close to you, regardless of your skill in the weapon
you're using, but you can take them out from over the horizon with a single
arrow if you've got a semi-decent Marksman skill...)

Then again, when you're walking through a densely-wooded wilderness in the
real world, how much warning music do you get before a cliff-racer attacks
you? That's generally the attitude I take when I play the game. It kind of
evolves a paranoid style of game-play which involves a lot of stopping and
looking around to make sure nothing nasty, with big teeth is following
me.... That, and pre-emptively frying every cliff racer I see with Greater
Fireballs before they get a chance to attack me...

There's actually a certain satisfaction in that...

Nope, you just need a special S-ATA connector, which will convey data
*and* power, if I understood it correctly (I should have a look into
the case). The only IDE cable is attached to the DVD and DVD burner. So
go ahead, it might make a difference.

And if your old IDE gets bad, you won't lose your savegames :)

Yeah, I think I got the cables with my motherboard. I'll have to go dig
them up again...

Well, if the IDE drive that the game is currently on goes bad, I'll have
more serious problems than lost savegames, since that's the Windows drive as
well. It's only 10GB, so it may be time to retire it, but reinstalling
Windows and then all my software again will be about a week's worth of work
(in between the work that I get paid for) at least...

Use a program like Ghost to transfer it all across. Reinstalling
shouldn't be necessary if all you do is change drives.
