Hello everyone,

Today, i came with the most weird issue i ever had.

I have No sound after volume level 30 but lower yes i cant hear everything. after level 30 its gives a small inaudible sound like a really small kick/bip. the wired part is i can hear full high volume sound on sound settings ->speakers->right click -> test speaker

What i did to troubleshoot:
Part 1/ software : install new driver, cleaner, anti virus check , bios update, chipset driver install - Not working

Part 2/OS : instal USB new window fresh iso, boot on it same issue. Install USB Ubuntu stick, run it same sound issue. Not Working

Part 3/Hardware: reset laptop timing, changes speakers to a new one, disconnect battery and so. Not working

Please, im lost what it could be ? chipset bios? motherboard faulty for no reason ? i really dk anymore

Thanks a lot.
Main system W10 x64
Laptop X280 Lenovo that has sound issue

Yes i run lenovo software updater and install everything :

What i notice past days (main changes in laptop) that may interfer or cause but i couldnt find it :

-I install a new nvme 2to instead of a 1to (before speaker changes)
-I update the Bios of the laptop, in addition to run a bios update of chipset (both were asked by lonovo software)

nothing more special done.

PS: the most wired part, is how can i hear clear high volume sound on Windows Setting panel -> Sound-> speaker->test ?

So you had exact same problem on Ubuntu? Sound until 30%? thats what made me think its hardware. If it were different in Ubuntu I could point at windows.

PS: the most wired part, is how can i hear clear high volume sound on Windows Setting panel -> Sound-> speaker->test ?
that sure is weird. it shouldn't happen if it mutes in both OS at same point.

if it were just windows, I would suggest a clean boot. It shouldn't make any difference but worth a try

Try a clean boot and see if it changes anything - make sure to read instructions and make sure NOT to disable any microsoft services or windows won't load right - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

It doesn’t delete anything, it just stops non Microsoft programs running with start. Easy to reverse.

if clean boot fixes it, it shows its likely a startup program. You should, over a number of startups. restart the programs you stopped to isolate the one that is to blame.

it shouldn't make any difference.

Another thought is perhaps the BIOS flash didn't work right and is reason for the behaviour.

New data from troubleshooting:

-Tested again under Ubuntu : this time without connecting the NVME with windows, only USB stick ubuntu. Same problem. Sound not working. But following new testing new infos:

-Only the right speaker is working - left is off . when i Set balance to right, sound works, and when i set it to left or both sound disappear. Test done under Ubuntu

Testes again same Ubuntu resulat on Windows : confirmed right working, left or both mode not working.

Okey, i join your hypothesis on Bios update gone wrong, or chipset firmware update also.

I need to re-install both and see. as its not easy Lenovo is blocking downgrade and re-install

Edit : Installed both bios downgrade and update - no effect.
installed chipset firmware update - no effet.
only remaining test - try to downgrading firmware of chipset and see

Thanks, i ll keep you updated

I asked they basically said go to repair center we cant help you. I'm traveling for long time and my pc not in warranty anymore anyway. So its like going to any repair shop and ask him same as here. i can resume the situation to quick understanding :

Laptop X280 : Speaker left works not right, or both at level 30 volume. Same issue happen in Llnux and Windows. Speaker have been changed with news ones same issue. Its not that Software issue =(OS) and its not that Hardware =(Speaker)
