What specifications should match for a GPU to work with a MoBo? What kind of bottleneck would an outdated mobo cause to a high end gpu? (eg. a 7 y/o mobo with a gtx780).

Solution
Generally, whenever buying a GPU, check its PCI information. Match this information with the motherboard's specs. Now a days, GPUs are using PICe 3.0 Express X16 interface. Modern motherboards have this slot right below the CPU socket, with many boards having multiple of PCI slots.

Mentioned mobo has:

1 x PCIe x16
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI 2.2

Any gaming GPU would run on this mobo.
