Motherbard socket help.

Ok, my buddy just got got into pc gaming and decided to build his first pc, sadly i dont really know much about computers so ill ask here. His motherboard socket is an am3 socket and the cpu he wants to get is an AMD PHENOM II X4 B95 but it says it is an am2+/ am3 cpu and the motherboard supports any amd phenom ii x4 B9x cpu so the question is will it work with the motherboard?

Yes it should work.

You can go to the Motherboard vendors website and check the compatibility matrix.
You may need a BIOS upgrade.

Alternately what is the Motherboard (make and Model).

Has he already bought the components?
