Question Motherboard and SSD compatibility

Hi.
My mobo is asus Z97-pro. It has M.2 (socket 3) port on it and in the manual says it is PCIe lane form . So i wonder if i can install Nvme ssd on it and use it?(without updating and manipulating bios)
If it so, can i use it for OS drive?
Because somewhere i have read that some motherboards which has the slot, but still can't read and use nvme ssd.

Hmm not sure; the closest I came was their H97i board with a Samsung 970 Evo Plus and that worked fine in terms of booting and storage, although the speed did not seem to be very fast. (With that itx board the socket is on the back of the board so heat dissipation may have been a problem).
