Motherboard ATX-12V slot

I recently ordered a new mobo and my previous mobo had a 8 pin and now this one has a 4 pin and the PSU only has 8 connectors so am I allowed to put half of it in and leave the other bit hanging off?

The 8pin connector from your PSU should separate into two 4-pin connectors. If it separates into a 6+2 pin, then you are looking at the PCI/E video card connector.
