Motherboard compatability with an i7 4970k

Yes it will work and it will most likely work without a BIOS update.

A buddy of mine uses 4690K with Z87-GD65 (no BOIS updated was needed).

Also, I am using 4770K with Z97 Maximus VII Hero and no BIOS update was needed (since day one motherboard was released).

All Z87 mobos need a bios update to work with haswell refresh chips z87 came out before haswell refresh. I dont know why your friends would work but dont give they guy advice on something that might work, its common knowledge that haswell refresh chips need a bios update to work with z87 look it up.

Even if BIOS update is needed then it's not a big deal. First thing I did was update the BIOS on my Z97 Maximus VII Hero even though my 4770K worked perfectly fine without BIOS update.

It is needed with that mobo i looked it up.And it can be a big deal to someone who doesn't know how to do it since you can brink the mobo if you do wrong, not to mention he would have to have a cpu that is compatible to even boot it up so you could flash the bios. Its best just to buy a z97 or h97 mobo.

If going out and buying the mobo new, the BIOS update should already be applied, the update for it was a long time ago, unless you get a mobo that has been gathering dust for a long time on a shel it should already have the newer BIOS, have to think those updates were about a year and a half ago and there have been 3-5 additional BIOS updates since then

That z87 msi board that the op has is not compatible with haswell refresh chips without a bios update. It says it right on there site. MSI is not going around unboxing there old z87 mobos to update there bios for haswell refresh chips. And i doubt any other motherboard manufacturer is either.

That's my point exactly! Like I said before, my buddy is using a Z87 GD-65 on his i5 4690K without BIOS update. When Z97 Maximus VII Hero came out day one (I was in need of new mobo) is when I got it and used it on my i7 4770K without BIOS update a tiny bit without any problems. After updating the BIOS I didn't notice any changes what's so ever.

hi sorry for late message,

but if this is the case, is the 4770 Haswell and the 4790 Haswell refresh?

So will 4770 work with Z87? Just not the 4790?
