Motherboard + CPU

Usually, peoples want other to build the system they are dreaming of.. This guy don't need everything special.. And both brand will do good. But the fact that he don't seem to care about his computer is a concern here, if he plan using high end P4, because they produce more heat than anything else on the market.. So, good PSU and CASE is what would matter the most, to keep his computer running stable 24/7. Computer are dust magnet...

Dual core CPU are good for what he plan to do. Hyperthreading simply use wasted clock cycle to perform something else.. That's the deal with long pipeline.. While HT cpu could do here, dual core would do better IMHO.. The technology is there so I'd go for it.

As for AMD vs Intel.. boring. One simply run with less heat and draw less power while being performing. that the one I use.. That will be the one I'l be always using.. no matter the brand.. give me efficiency.

Again, thanks for all the great input and tips guys!

As far as the case goes, whatever I get there I'll get filter for the fan, and I will also have another fan inside, so that should keep it cool.

I did look into dual-core CPUs but would they really benefit me and things that I'll be using the computer for?

PS is 480W

As someone mentioned, no I don't really do anything that would make the computer/OS go mad, and the only time when I see that everything is really slow is when I'm decoding video or converting video formats, so I hope that new system will fix that.

Also, right now I have 3 hard drives so there's only one ide spot left for a dvd burner even though I also have cd burner I'd like installed. I wanted to get something bigger but since new system is coming soon I'll wait til then, and make sure I have at least 2 x 250gb sata with 16mb cache so it lasts me a while.

Yes firefox works for that, I'd recommend it.

Looks like I'll look into dual core then too, and to fit in the budget I have for this system I'd have to go for P4 D820 or D830, IF there's enough difference between those two to spend almost $100 more?

If you plan on Intel, add 1 fan at the front to cool your HDDs and one that will blow directly on the CPU. You still have to see how hot those can be.. With MD, you can have the same, but mine are plugged to a fan controller to reduce speed and noise by the matter. I wouldnt do that with an Intel running 100% full load.

Well, maybe yes, maybe no. It will depend of your apps and what future apps will use them or not. The next CPU I'll get will be dual core. Not that I would benefit for real now, but it would make some of my work smoother for sure. But if you don't have the budget, or rather have a faster single core CPU, then I guess that it would do the same.. Remember.. your Celeron is very underpowered.. Even a 2.4 GHz P4 would run enough faster.

wattage is not everything.. I got a 450w PSU not able to start a simple AMD3000+, nforce3 motherboard and radeon9600xt video card.. A trusty 300w did make it run stable thou .. What brand?

Sure, then if you plan to do that, and something else, get dual core. To answer your next post, I would get the 830d for that. Intel loves MHz.. and that 200 more will do good. So either the AMD3800+ X2 or the 830D for video work. Seriously. I do video here and even if my 3000+ is running 225 MHZ higher than supposed, I hope that it could go faster.. Now, will I'll be ever happy even if I have the fastest thing on earth.. that's another story ...

Hdds... I hate them. That's the hottest parts in my system, the noisier pieces too, and the worst performing parts too.. But how can we do something without them ..

You say 2 HDD.. really need to for some RAID array or siply for storage?

I'm near 800 gb of storage space here.. I could use some more..

I'm running 2x160gb in a RAID0 array for editing video and some storage. I have a fan blowing at them running half speed. no noise and keep the HDD cool enough because they are close together. The third HDD is a 250 gigs samsumg. Running quiet, and fast.. Others are withing external case plugged on USB2.0 header. When not needed, I turn them off..no more noise from them.. I use them for backup and storage.

I removed one dvd burner from my system and use it as an external unit with USB 2.0 adapter. I don't have a CD burner anymore.. only DVd burner. They are not more expensive than CD burner and are more versatile.

If you're adamant on Intel then here's the motherboard for you.

If you decide to go AMD then the Socket 939 series boards are more than enough to keep pace with Intel's platform.

Stability issues are a thing of the past. Name brand PSUs are built for reliability. I wouldn't save money on this component.

My system has been running 24/7 since I registered in the THG forumZ! Only time I go offline is when I do an upgrade or scheduled maintenance.

I'm not trying to tell you what to buy but in my opinion, for what you're going to use the computer for, your current setup will more than handle it.

Good Post! :trophy:

I did not mention Gigabyte only because I have no experience with them.

Canada Computers seems to have loads of Gigabyte choices.

Now, get either an AMD X2 3800+ or Intel 820D. The AMD will cost more but wil give you more computing power, less noise and les heat. But the 820D will be sufficient. the 830 D would be a closer match for the 3800+.

In my experience, Gigabyte has some solid motherboard.

Yes, Gigabyte has stable mobos and few have innovative cooling with them...

It is true that the Pentium w/HT tend to put out more heat, but noise and heat will not be an issue if you provide adequate ventilation with a simple yet cheap duct mod here to enhance your cooling efficiency http://overclockers.com/tips1187/ ... which will also add to stability..

I'll still go with the Pentium w/HT, due to multitasking.
