Tom's recommended the Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Xtreme but the price is double what the review noted, if you can find one in stock. Newegg is now using third party vendors shipping from China, not my preference. I can wait but what are my options? My last build was in 2017 and I used an ASUS ROG Rampage V Edition 10. It lasted 8 years but the software I use is starting to bog down. 4K video and large batch processing of images with Adobe Photoshop 2025, DxO Prime Raw, Topaz and others I want more. I don't mind building a workstation that will last me another 8 years.

Do prices spike when back-ordered or is $1K + what I can expect to pay?

I don't need to overclock and am not a gamer but I do extensive photo and video editing. I will be ordering a nice video card and a minimum of 96 GB DDR5. Thanks.

newegg has perhaps a dozen Z790 DDR5 motherboards offering free shipping from USA and under $200

Interesting that the ones with wifi included tend to be unusually expensive; over $200

A $25 wifi add in card on such a board may be a better deal.

Most look good to me.

I am looking for a robust, higher end motherboard that will last as long as my previous ASUS ROG Rampage V Edition 10. I deal with huge files and have a NAS and a 10GB ethernet port would be useful as well as a number of M.2 connections. Not really interested in the lower tier motherboards. Wifi is not a concern. Thanks.

This is basically the best board features wise for LGA 1700: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VT...-lga1700-motherboard-proart-z790-creator-wifi

The disadvantages it has are slightly worse VRM (still plenty for a 14900K/KF/KS unless removing power limits with good cooling) than comparably prices boards and the memory speed listed as supported is slightly lower (still supports 7200 which is the common "sweet spot" for 13th/14th gen).

Just some other notes regarding 10gb:
  • MSI's only board with 10GbE is the Godlike which will cost a lot for the newer one, but the first one is $550 new from Newegg (who knows how much longer this board will be around and it's very big)
  • Gigabyte has the Aorus Master X which is a decent choice at its current price of $350-380
  • Putting your own 10GbE card in is certainly an option but you will lose one of the PCIe slots to do so and client platforms tend to be fairly stingy with PCIe slots.

If you are not going to overclock you really don't need the best motherboard. The key thing that lets you overclock is better power management on the motherboard. You are going to pay a lot for features you do not use.

8 years is kinda a long time. Generally if the parts last past the first year they will go until you get tired of the machine...or microsoft just declares it too old.

The platform you are looking at is end of the line. You really should be looking at the newer intel stuff. Although not real impressive the cpu do run faster than the 14900k and support higher speed memory. If we assume intel is still in business they should introduce new and faster cpu for these new motherboards over the next few years.
