Hello, I am in need of a help.

I was recently gifted a gtx 1060 (3GB) which I immediately installed to my pc which is running smoothly and ok but the problem is though I was thinking it might be getting bottlenecked by my old processor an i3-2100 and was hoping of upgrading to a i5 processor the problem is, is that my motherboard has a 1155 socket any help?.

My specs are:

Processor: Core i3-2100 3.10GHz
Motherboard: H61M-C (1155 Socket) (Sandy Bridge)
Gforce GTX 1060 3GB
600W Coolermaster PSU
1TB Western Digital

I was hoping of changing my Processor to an i5 and intel only I'm afraid I don't know much about radeon products (sorry) and also I am on a tight budget.

Any help with upgrading my processor to a i5 with a 1155 socket run good with games?

Thank you

Solution
Since most used Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge i7 processors are selling at a premium now (here in the US anyway), you may want to spend less and look into a 3GHz or faster i5 quad core instead. And i5-2xxx or i5-3xxx (BIOS update may be required for the latter) will be an improvement over the i3-2100 you have now.
Here are some ebay examples
Don't worry about Radeon products when it comes to processors. Your board won't use anything but Intel processors. Here is a list of the CPUs that you can use with that board. Note the BIOS version (or later) required for the chip to be properly recognized.

Since those CPUs are all out of production now, you will probably have to locate one used. Unless you get lucky.

Ebay is your best friend for lga1155 components. Granted most are used, but that's the nature of the beast when dealing with 5+ year old tech that's not seen any production in a couple of years.
My entire rig was bought from eBay parts and still runs perfect.

Hi, thank you for the input any suggestion there that is good for a gtx 1060 3gb and not bottleneck it?

I read another post similar to mine you also told him that the i5-3570 is good? Is that still good today? Also if I do upgrade my processor is it required to reformat my PC?

Thank you!~

Hi, thanks for the info. I'd probably try my local computer stores first before going for Ebay, I haven't bought any product online and am scared
plus I have 0 knowledge of assembling my own pc, programming the bios etc.

Seriously doubt that any local stores have any lga1155 stuff in stock, unless you live in an indo-asian market. So good luck with that hunt.

Best and easiest swap for you would be the i7-2600k, it's a drop in, plug and play cpu that'll require no bios tampering other than making sure you have the last updates (done for windows compatibility if nothing else). The best possible cpu would be an i7-3770K, but the move from Sandy to Ivy-Bridge might require a bios update prior to swap if you have not done that already. Even a Xeon 1230v3 would be good.

Hi, thank you for the input, I kind of lost you there so what kind of i5 do you suggest which as you said will spend less? Thankyou

Your board can use any 2nd generation ( called Sandy Bridge) i-Core processor or 3rd generation (called Ivy Bridge) processor; the latter may take a BIOS update.
The 2nd gen i5 processors are named with a "2" in their numbering scheme. ex: i5-2300, i5-2400, i5-2500...
The 3rd gen i5 processors are named with a "3"in their numbering scheme. ex: i5-3450, i5-3550. i5-3570...
They all fit the LGA 1155 socket that your board has. Since your i3 is a 3.1GHz CPU, I would look for an i5 of at least that speed.
