Question Motherboard may be toast

Hi all,

I recently finished my new build and it wasn't turning on at first. It turns out the CPU power cables were plugged into the wrong spot, so I fixed it on the power supply. However, I forgot to plug the CPU power cables back into the motherboard, and when I went to start the computer by jumping it with a screwdriver, everything turn on for about half a second, then there was a pop, then a bit of smoke coming from where the CPU power cables go. Did I accidentally fry my CPU? Right now I can get the RAM to light up but thats it. It would be great if someone could help me.

I did post this on reddit and 2 different people told me that the motherboard was most likely dead but if anyone has a different thought that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

A poping sound is frequently caused by capacitors in the power supply. I'd verify the power supply voltages before jumping to the conclusion of the mother board. One can find the voltages and pinouts here: www.smpspowersupply.com

could this have also been the cause of the smoke? the power supply? because after the pop and smoke I tried turning it on again (with all of the cables plugged in, and the RAM lit up

What are the specs for this system (make/model of ALL installed components)?
Ryzen 7 7700x, NZXT Kraken 280 (the one with the screen), Gigabyte Aorus B650 Elite AX, 32 GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB @ 6000mz, 1 TB Corsair MP600 Elite M.2 SSD, 4 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD, Corsair RM 850x power supply, NZXT S340 Elite case

Do you know have the 4-pin, 8-pin, and 24-pin power connectors properly attached to the PSU and motherboard?
yes I do I had forgotten to plug both the 8 pin and 4 pin cables into the motherboard when it popped and some smoke came out. the 24 pin cable was already in, and the 8-pin and 4-pin cables were plugged into the power supply at the time of the pop

Has anything ever appeared on screen? How long have you allowed the system to be powered on, before powering off if nothing showed? AM5 systems can take a couple minutes to post the first time, while memory is trained and hardware configured.

I posted this thread because of the pop and then smoke, not that it wasn't posting or having anything show up on the screen. Nothing showed up on the screen before I forgot to plug it in, and nothing happened afterwards. I made this thread to see if anyone more knowledgeable than myself knew if I fried the motherboard or CPU, not that the PC wasn't booting or posting. My main concern is that there was a pop and then some smoke, not that it wasn't booting.
