Ok guys I can generally solve my computer issues with help from my friends and the internet but I'm looking for some more oppinons. The problem is my computer will randomly fall asleep while in use and refuse to wake up. My monitor will give me a message saying entering sleep mode and my only option is to kill the power on the PSU seeing as the power on the front of the tower is unresponsive. This began after getting a new Radeon 5670 and putting it in. I have triple checked all of the power settings and all my drivers. All the settings are turned to never turn display off/go to sleep and all drivers are updated. Now I found a temporary fix over winter break but now that school is starting I want to try and get it fixed. My temporary fix was increasing the voltage in the bios on the PCIE slot up to 75W from the default 25W. The catch is it only fixes it while I'm playing skyrim. I got the game over break and found a fix to play skyrim and was like cool but if I close skyrim and start to do other things it will go to sleep. My computer will run fine with the integrated graphics card but I havn't tried playing skyrim on it. Based on that my guess is either its a PSU issue or the mobo is having issues distributing the power. I am considering replacing the PSU and then the mobo to see if either fixes it but just looking for thoughts.

Note:bios are also up to date

my specs:

Athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.0GHz
Biostar TA780G M2+
1G DDR2 ram x4
Radeon 5670
Rosewill 500W PSU

The machine sleeps when exiting a game or just spontaneously sleep? This is something I have not heard of before and is likely not a hardware issue. How do you know the machine is actually sleeping vs. just shutting off (your monitor displaying a sleep message is for the monitor is typically indicating that IT is going into a sleep state and not the entire computer)?

Try using an ubuntu live cd and boot that then run a gpu stress test within ubuntu and state the results you have from that.

Additionally your motherboard may only support certain sleep states and may not properly wake from those not supported.

yeaah but at the time I was kinda on a budget but I was thinking of replacing the psu first and seeing if that helped be for moving to the mobo.

It will randomly go to sleep. Not just after exiting Skyrim. It may be Im on facebook, installing stuff, or even just sitting doing nothing. I have tried different monitors and tried hooking it up to a different monitor when this happens and nothing happens. As I mentioned all of my power settings are set so it should never go to sleep or turn the display off so with that and drivers ruled out I've been leaning more and more towards the hardware side.

I actually had ubuntu on this machine before I upgraded my gpu and had the problem occur often in Ubuntu. I attributed it to Ubuntu and so uninstalled it and it seemed to go away until I upgraded my gpu.

Note: have not tried ubuntu since upgrading graphics card depending on what others think I may give this a shot anyway

Alright I'll give that a try and post back results 😛.
