I'm upgrading and building a new pc, and under my motherboards specifications, it reads, "DDR4 2133"

Does this mean my ram HAS to be ddr4-2133? I was planning on buying Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory, but will this not work, or will it hurt the system?

Thanks for the help

No, it won't hurt the system. The motherboard specification states the type (DDR4) and the maximum speed supported (2133).

Since the motherboard and the RAM are both DDR4 they are compatible. Even though your RAM is guaranteed to run at 2666, the motherboard only supports a maximum speed of 2133 so the RAM will only run at a maximum speed of 2133 when installed in the system, not its maximum capability of 2666.

Typically, slower RAM is cheaper so buying DDR4 2133 may save you a few bucks.

It should just run at 2133. I bought DDR4 2400 for my HTPC that has a H170 board and an i3 6100 and it just clocked down and runs just fine at 2133. I can't guarantee it will run but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't. But why waste the money surely there is a 2133 kit that is cheaper.

It will run normally, but the clock speed will me limited to the mobo limits, which is 2133.
So you will be having 2x8GB DDR4-2133.

IMO it won't make that of a difference, but if you want to fully experience the total speed of your RAM, you'll need to change the mobo.

So buying Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory would be the smarter choice, besides the fact it only saves 2 bucks

Depends on the actual sets, if you get plain jane 2133/15 vs say 2666/14 or 15 then the 2666 is the better buy, as I mentioned you'll want to check the timings....for the most part plain jane 2133/15 runs at 2133/15 with a 2666/15 set it should run 2133 at CL13 or so which offers a performance boost for those $2 difference

I barely understood most of that so

So would you say the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB
DDR4-2133 or DDR4-2666
Sorry I'm not sure what to look for, but if your saying that for the 2 dollar difference I should get the 2666 since it may run a bit faster?

It might well, would need the actual model number of the sets you are looking at. Basically what I'm saying is that depending on the set, while the 2666 might only run at 2133, it might well run at a lower CAS Latecy which provides for faster clock cyles at 2133 and thus better performance
