So, I wanna upgrade my pc and get rid of an old amd processor. To do so, I wanna buy the H110M-H DDR3 from gigabyte and I7-6700k. The thing is: why there are motherboards out there on the market that suports ddr3 on skylake processors if they are (according to intel) a no go? I've got 2x4GB RAM's that operates at 1.5V and don't wanna upgrade them since I don't see many profit of it (besides, I live in a country where hardware has a huuuge amount of taxes, making it a lot pricey). So... what is the deal with these motherboards? they have some kind of limitation that only operates the ram at 1.35v or below it? is it really safe to use that setup that I wrote before?

Solution

Ideally that could work at...
Skylake memory controllers only support DDR3L so yes 1.5V ram either will not be stable, or the memory controller could face some trouble. I would not get a 6700K on such a low end motherboard though. if you want to get an overclockable chip you need a z170 board. If you are only gaming, then save $100 and get the i5 6600K it is as good in gaming, and there still are essentially no games that use more than 4 cores.

Thank you on the i5 tip, still gonna research a bit more before I buy it. I wanted to save some money on not buying new memory ram's but it looks like that ain't the case with skylake... The thing that I don't get it is the ddr3 support with the LGA1151 socket

I use my pc mostly for gaming. I've got GA78lmt as motherboard, fx-6300, GTX970 and 8gb of ram (ddr3). I don't exacly have the money for the i7, that's why I'm planning to pay it all over the next year with my credit card. Nothing really decided though, still looking for options... thanks for the advice

Ideally that could work at the loss of performance, but I do not think any z170 boards support DDR3, and getting a cheaper board is not really worth it.

I doubt your ram would work at 3.5v.
Skylake motherboards that support DDR3 tend to be budget boards.
Really not worth it.
Moreover, you likely should be buying a 2 x 8gb ram kit anyway.

I see you use this mainly for gaming.
Consider buying a I3-6100. It is considerably cheaper and is a great mid range gamer.

I might suggest you buy a Z170 motherboard.
That will allow you to upgrade to a I5-6600K which can be overclocked and perform in games on a par with a I7-6700K.
