Question Motion Banding on my LG C1 OLED TV During Video Game Play.

Hello.

Lately, I notice that when I play high-end video games, such as Cyberpunk 2077, using my big screen TV the image breaks up a bit during moments when the action moves quickly.

For instance, when I spin the camera view in the game so a scene pans around, tilts up or down, etc., the image briefly breaks into bands, where one band takes slightly longer to catch up to the one adjacent to it. The problem presents itself mainly when there are large areas of the image that move. It doesn’t appear as much (or as obviously) when the motion is slower or when smaller areas or objects are moving.

My games are all PC based and played from my Windows 11 computer, not via a console like PlayStation or Xbox. But I usually prefer to play them using my TV, which is connected to the computer via my AV receiver, using HDMI cables.

Playing the same game on my computer display, which is connected via a DisplayPort cable, does not produce the same issue. The image moves as a cohesive whole without any noticeable banding.

I suppose this is a refresh rate issue, but don’t know what to do to improve the motion quality on my TV.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Here are the specs for my setup.

Thanks for any help.

Avr passes 4k 120Hz and does variable refresh rate, not sure what that means for Gsync though. Have you set 120Hz in NvidiaCP or Windows and able to enable Gsync? You'll have to limit fps anyway if Gsync is available because Gsync alone doesn't restrict fps from reaching over refresh rate, when it does you can get tearing and misaligned images. If your system is capable of outputting over 120fps in the games you play then try limit fps in NvidiaCP manage 3D settings to 119.

Thanks for your reply, boju.

For some reason the highest refresh rate that appears in the NVIDIA control panel for my Denon receiver for 4K resolution is only 60Hz, even though the receiver should be able to accommodate 120Hz. I don't know if there's some setting on the receiver that I'm overlooking.

Are there any settings on the TV itself that I also need to check and change?

I have C1 too and there's nothing in TV menu to set 120Hz that i can remember. But i do remember i had to select PC set of resolutions in Windows/ or NvidiaCP for 120Hz not TV resolutions which is limited to 60.

Avr should have it's own settings as well for passthrough refresh rates and resolution options.
