Mouse and keyboard stop responding, but computer continues to work.

Sometimes my mouse and keyboard just stop responding. The keyboard keys don't work and the mouse doesn't move. The lights on the keyboard and mouse stay on, but don't turn off. But the computer itself continues to work fine. This really didn't start happening until my keyboard started to crap out on me. It's an old crappy Dynex keyboard that's been dropped a lot, so sometimes if the wire on the keyboard moves, the keyboard turns off and I have to position the wire again in a certain way for it to go on again. I'm thinking maybe when the keyboard craps out, it does something to the USB ports. Think this could be the problem? The drivers seem to be up to date, and I don't find any errors in anything I do. I haven't tried yet to see if other USB things work after it freezes, I'll try it if it freezes again. Restarting the computer fixes the problem. The computer itself is brand new, only about 3 months old. I'll know if the keyboard is somehow responsible when I get my new keyboard I ordered online in a few days.

I have an Asus P8Z77V-LK motherboard, i5 3570k CPU, Corsair CX600 PSU, 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance RAM, and GTX 760 video card. My mouse is a Logitech M310.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. It's not a solution, just an observation. I'm having the exact same issue: my USB mouse and keyboard suddenly stop working, the mouse laser is off, the keyboard Num Lock light remains on, but neither responds.

It could just be my imagination, but it feels like this only happens when I'm actually moving the mouse. That is, it will freeze when the mouse cursor is moving. (Lately I'm starting to suspect it might be tied to my using Chrome, but I have not yet proven that hunch.)

If I disconnect each device I hear the Windows sound indicating a USB device was unplugged, and if I plug them into a port that I haven't used before, they start to work again. A reboot allows me to move them back to any USB port until the next time they stop working.

Incidentally, this started when I was on Windows 7 Ultimate, and it has continued to happen after a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro. Other than this annoyance, my PC is working flawlessly and is very clean and very fast. I am hoping someone out there has the answer!

ok, been searching like crazy for the answer to this as well. I hear the familiar ba-dump from windows then my mouse and keyboard died. power lights, laser, everything. would plug them into another couple USB ports and they would work fine for a while, then, lock up.. i would finally have to reboot to get them working again.it always seemed like it was when I was moving the mouse around too. so I found an answer I think worked. go into device manager and the Universal Serial Bus power management and turn off the checkmark that talks about powering them down. then go into the control panel to your power settings and advanced power options and disable the power saving for the USB's...

Just try another mouse. A defective mouse (old, damaged, dropped) can behave like that. If using another mouse stops the problem, replace your old one.

As for the initial message of the thread, it looks like a similar situation. Why would you use a busted keyboard? Check first a good one.

My problem persisted until I replaced the mouse. Problem solved.
