I have a Dell OptiPlex 7080 PC and everything was working fine till yesterday.

Most of the time left-click works, but sometimes it does not register, and even sometimes the system thinks that it is double-click! Again, this issue does not always happen, it happens randomly.

What would cause this issue? What's the fix?

Anything special about this mouse?

You can get a basic mouse for about 10 bucks.....cheap test.

Unplug and replug the mouse....test.

The reason everyone so far has suggested trying a new mouse is because this is usually a mechanical issue.

The internal mouse switches themselves are pressed by a plastic post, and over time the very tip of the post starts to flow or mushroom around the switch to cause the double clicks. This is especially common with Logitech, who were OEM for Dell mice for decades. I have no idea what cheap Chinese manufacturer makes them now.

The solution is to open the mouse and trim down the damage on the end of the affected post. You can shim up the end with some aluminum metal tape both to reduce the chances of this happening again, and so you don't have to press down as far (trimming the post obviously increases the travel required, and it would be annoying if the left button required more travel than the right one)
