I built a new PC with an M.2 SSD that I plan to use as my boot drive. I am moving my current PC's HDD over to use as a secondary storage and I want to move Windows 10 to the HDD after I use the restore windows feature.
I have a Windows 8 license and used the free upgrade to Windows 10, so I only have the Windows 8 install disc.
How do I move the OS over to the SSD? If possible, without a clone tool?

Solution

If you've upgraded to Win 10, you do not need the Win 8 anymore. Nor can you use it.

If you just wish to do a clean install on this new drive, create your own DVD or USB install, here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Boot from that, install on the new drive.

With that method all I need to do is use a USB and install Windows 10 through that?
Don't I need a Windows 10 key for that to work?

That depends.
Is this in the same system, and just on a different drive?
If so, then you just need to install it.

If this is going into a different system, read and do this before you change any hardware:

Solution

This is a 100% new build. I have Windows linked to my account, so I can do as you said and everything should be fine?

Just to recap:
- Create install media (USB)
- Install windows 10 on SSD in completely new machine
- Sign into Microsoft account
- Activate the device
- Hooray?

Yes.
The Activation Troubleshooter is what you're looking for.
