Hi, my motherboard has packed up and I've bought a new motherboard to replace it. What are the steps to move my Ivy Bridge LGA1155 i5 core CPU to the new motherboard? It didn't come or need thermal paste, just the CPU fan, and has worked fine for the past four years. If I move it, can I just slot it in or do I need to do anything additional, e.g. get thermal paste or anything else?

Solution
You will need fresh thermal paste.

Remove the old heatsink, unlatch the CPU, move the CPU to the new board, latch the CPU, apply thermal paste, put the heatsink on and lock it into place. Be careful that you've locked the heatsink correctly, Intel's push-pin design is not intuitive for many people.
