The computer is fairly old ~4 years the only part which i havent replaced in the last 2 years is the cpu.
I was about to play a game with my friends when i noticed my internet was lagging, as i was watching a youtube video, so i slid it forward slightly to make sure the internet card was in right.
At this moment it made a loud popping sound and turned off, i instantly smelt burning and pulled the power out the back.

10 minutes later i plugged it back in and clicked the power button on the case and absolutely nothing happened, so i thought it was psu, but as the cpu is fairly old i thought that was the problem, any ideas?

Specs:

CPU:i5 2500k
GPU: R9 280x
PSU:corsair RM750
RAM: 2 sticks 4gb each of corsair ram

Totally worth a shot. It may well power up fine...
It was most likely the PSU. Open it up, smell the PSU (it likely will smell burnt). On top of that review all the wiring and find where it shorted out. You may see a burnt wire or a burnt spot on the board. The CPU didn't cause this.

Now all that said, if you got lucky it only popped the PSU and you can replace it and move on with life. However many times something like this will fry the motherboard and CPU (or everything). So your decision point now is to buy a new PSU and try it or just replace the whole system. I would reccomend buying the PSU you would want for if you were to build a new one, so you have a starting point.

i have a spare psu so i could try that
