I have a 2TB HDD, partitioned to make a 250GB C: drive for windows files and with the rest of the 1.57TB a separate D: drive for games

I just got a 250GB SSD and want to move just whats in the C: partition into the new SSD, is this at all possible, or will I have to clear the rest of the drive to clone the whole thing?

Solution

How much space is consumed in your 250GB partition? If under 200GB, we can do this.

These steps, with changes:

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off...
Just few points, your 250GB SSD will be smaller than that once initialized. Also your drive most probably has more than C: partition, one or two before C:, also needed for booting so you have to allow more space for the. you need to make your present C: drive to less than 240GB to fit on new one.
For proper SSD operation it needs to be connected to SATA in AHCI mode and if your OS isn't set for it, it will not BOOT.
All together it's easier to reinstall OS and programs to SSD.
Another option is to use Macrium Reflect free to make backup of C: and partitions need for booting and restore them to SSD. MR has option to set SSD as necessary for it's proper operation.

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive (Changes here - Do not select your 1.57TB D partition)
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the 450MB Recovery Partition, here:
