Just bought a new drive. I want to move my programs from old (D:)
drive, to new (H:) drive.

Is there an easy way - short of removing and re-installing?

Could I 'trick' the system by naming a new partition D: or something
like that?

TIA

If you are trying to move everything over to the new drive, then your best
bet is to cleanup the drive, defrag it and use a backup utility like
driveimage
or ghost etc to a)get a good backup and b) re-install the image onto the
new drive (still leaving you with a good backup).

If you simply want to move some things like streets&trips or games etc
that use lots of space, I am not sure about XP, but there used to be a
number of utilities out there that claimed they could move the programs
for you -- copy it to the new drive then update all references to point
to the new location. I can't think of the name off hand, System Mechanic
http://www.real.com/accessories/?prod=sysmech&src=rprdxint,rcahome
is one that claims it can do that.

or there is this one that, while sounding interesting, sounds a bit risky if
something gets confused ...

I'm sure there are others, just don't remember them off hand. Do a
search for "relocate software windows" or some such pattern for
more info. Still can't remember the one I used to have that claimed
to do it -- seems to me it was part of Powerquest's utilities - maybe
came with Partition magic or something. Anybody else remember??

It's so much easier to suggest solutions when you don't know too much about
the problem

Hi,

There are some utilities available that can help you do this, but the only
safe way to do it is to uninstall and reinstall the software to avoid
missing any registry entries and pointers in the system files. The utilities
are fairly good for smaller programs, but not for large ones that create
thousands of entries and pointers.

That's kind of the idea I wanted. But, will it work - or are all the
links lost that way.
