I had bought a large external hard drive for a video library. Not all of my movies i saved on the library drive, but when i bought up a video to look at on the computer, i noticed that the audio was not sounding good. the audio in the video sounded all broke up. instead of smooth sounding, it was all crackling sound. what could cause the audio in the video file to sound all broken up.

Does this happen on a bunch of files or just one?

Do you get bad audio on other file formats...like MP3 or WMV or AVI or whatever?

Do you know for a FACT that the audio was ever good on this specific MP4?

If sound was good previously, was that when played back on some other drive?

Do you now have any other copy of this MP4 that sounds fine?

I have occasionally had video files go bad for unexplained reasons. It's quite rare, but it does happen. In my experience the most common defect is that they won't open at all, but nothing would surprise me. It could happen during the copy process.
