what is the deal with those? it comes with a couple of the ASUS ROG series boards.

And it says"The compact but versatile mPCIe Combo II further future-proofs your build with M.2 (NGFF, Next Generation Form Factor) connectivity for SSDs. M.2 is a fast and power-efficient standard that aims to replace mPCIe and mSATA, designed to optimize SSD performance. mPCIe Combo II works with your high speed M.2 SSDs and makes the most of their potential, helping you reduce load times to run your OS and games even faster"

First i thought mPCIe combo is just a separate slot where ASUS puts wifi and bluetooth combo cards, and saves users 1 free PCI e slot, but then i read on, and this M.2 SSD thing confuses me....

Is this important to get?

I myself discovered this intriguing SSD slot within the mPCIe Combo II card while unboxing my new Asus Maximus VI Impact motherboard.

I was thinking of using a relatively small-capacity (80GB) m.2 ssd in this slot as my boot drive (which may be what ASUS intended), to isolate the OS physically from everything else, as opposed to using one large drive (partitioned into C:, D: etc.) for OS, programs and files..

Any veteran PC builders out there care to weigh-in on the feasibility of an ngff m.2 mPCIe Combo II card boot drive at this point in time?

Its a great idea i can tell you first hand that screwing around can corrupt an os and its nice to know you don't have reinstall an entire steam library after you screw up, id like to see the transfer rats though

PS got the board mine didn't come with the card and you cant buy it anywhere

Most of the new boards are coming with this second generation slot. they did it in preparation for cards like the new Samsung SM951. The SM 951 is so much faster than SLI can possibly handle. I wouldn't be surprised if SLI wasn't phased out soon.

SM951 is currently selling at $208.99
