p05esto: I take it you haven't used anything other than Windows, ever... Yes, XP and Vista both work(post SP1 anyways), but they were never exactly innovative compared to Linux and even OSX(although OSX is shit for many other reasons). I don't support this particular legal action, but MS has definitely used it's monopoly status to unfairly manipulate the market in the past.

Try Linux sometime, you'll find all sorts of crazy *INNOVATIVE* features that Windows doesn't have, but they are stuck with almost no marketshare because PC vendors won't include Linux pre-installed with retail PCs. I've tried and failed miserably to purchase a laptop without Windows so I can install Linux on it. Apparently, the US govt is so intent on a Microsoft monopoly, that they can't take the chance that I might be installing a pirated copy of Windows, even if I swear up and down that I'm installing Linux, but I refuse to pay MS for a license that I don't want or need.

One of the best things to happen to the PC (personal computer) market was MS. Unifying a platform has propelled the PC into every home (and hence bringing the price down to near nothing). The normal everyday person won't use Linux and compatibility even between kernels is sketchy at best. Without a unified platform you can't have innovation and maturity in applications. Linux does have an advantage in innovating their OS because they can break stuff from version to version without pissing off the entire globe. If MS tried to innovate their UI to the point they break backwards compatibility, the market would reject their efforts.
