If you are interested in a simple/open source Office suite, check out Open Office (see: http://www.openoffice.org/ ). Be warned that it is only suitable for simple word processing. It's nowhere as polished as MS Office, but it is free.

If you are a student, chances are you can get a copy of Office 2007/2010 for a very low cost through your school.
