I can't remember if it was this NG that I got this info from or not so
please forgive if I am covering old ground here.

I while back on some NG I saw a message where you could goto MS and
sign up for a free CD that contains all the updates you see on the MS
update site. So…. I ordered one.

Got it mid week and checked it out. It works just like the update
site except all the updates are on the CD. It reads your system,
tells if you got 98/98SE/2000 or XP and then looks to see what updates
you need or have yet to get and lists them for you to choose & install
(no downloading required).

The CD contains all updates as of February 4th, 2004. So, for a
complete restoration process, this thing would cut some time off your
needed updates even though you would still need to go online and get
all updates offered after 2/4/04. I assume MS is doing this for 1 or
2 or both reasons. First to take a load off their update server and
to collect names, snail mail & email addresses and phone numbers to
sell to godless spammers. I gave a fake name and phone number and got
a free temporary email address to receive the order conformation email
at.

You can request the free CD at
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

TR,

Thanks for the tip. I ordered one, too. And, the price is right :)

Useful information. I just ordered one.

Now if only Micro$oft would place these CDs in all post offices and stores
selling computers, like AOL does, so there would be even more people who could
take advantage of the updates less painfully that across the internet.

After that, for those of use who install software day after day after day, what
about updated versions of all the operating system CDs.

I don't ask for too much, do I? It's just that Micro$oft makes all of our lives
more complicated with all the security holes and critical fixes, rather than
designing robust and secure software. It's about time they took some steps to
make all of our lives easier... Ben Myers

So would I! I have the CD, but have been reluctant to use it, since reading
the comment pasted below [from a WinME MS ng]. I do NOT want WMP 9!
bj

---
The only thing that Microsoft has to gain is good publicity for what is a
long overdue product, not that I personally like the implementation of the
update when used on Win Me. IMO any praise will quickly evaporate when Win
98SE and Win Me users find that WMP9 is installed on their systems
regardless of any user preference (Win 98 gets WMP7.1).

Not that I feel Microsoft are really interested in the views of those still
running or even supporting Win 9x systems.

I wasn't under the impression that M$ was interested in the views of
anyone running any or their OS's since most views seem to expand on
M$'s unrelenting bounty of bugs and holes that never seem to ever go
away but seem to multiply like rabbits in heat.

The implication of the quoted statement is that the Micro$oft CD installs EVERY
update, critical fix or patch, on your computer, not giving the option of
installing them selectively. Altho the Windows update web site does get
confused now and then, it functions well for the most part, albeit slowly for
any connection that is not broadband. And it allows selective installation of
all this stuff.

I, for one, advise EVERYONE to avoid .NET and to not install it. Ditto with
Passport. I mean... open your wallet to Micro$oft, and, if not Micro$oft, to
thieves who will hack the Passport web site owned by a company demonstrably
incompetent in computer security.

If this update CD is a sleazy way to hook everyone for .NET and Passport, call
out the European Community Anti-Trust folks and Mario Monti again. No sense in
calling the anti-trust people in Washington. They have shown themselves to be
toothless old watchdogs. Maybe Eliot Spitzer has the balls to take on
Micro$oft?

We'll see what gives when the update CD arrives on my doorstep. At least I have
a guinea pig computer I can sacrifice on the altar of Bill Gate$ and $teve
Ballmer for test purposes... Ben Myers

Have you bumped into any web sites that require it yet and will not
load if your don't have them installed?

I came across an online forum that required .NET for some reason or
the other before you could participate. I simply left a note in the
comments section that said if they required me to load unwanted
software just to participate in their forum then they could.... well I
wasn't interested.... I mean, I would think that if you were
designing a site where you want all the people you can get to come to
exchange and share ideas and what not through open forum and topics,
then you would design the site to handle the lowest common denominator
in configuration (without needing all the high end bells and
whistles).

But then what do I know.... All I got is common sense!

Can't you uninstall them selectively, particularly in XP? I ordered the CD
for Win 98 as I figured it would be a good thing to have around in case I
ever need to reformat my PIII 450 desktop and they are eventually going to
quit supporting 98. I use my laptop most of the time now but still use the
desktop for printing and scanning. The scanner is the big reason I avoided
installing XP on the desktop as I doubt I could make it work, it's an oldie
but a goodie.

By quitting to support 98 means no more "New" updates but the existing
updates will always be available and on the update site. And, as I
understand, they already stopped supporting 98 with new updates this
past January. This I was told by an x-employee of M$.

Yes, but it's already hard to find some older versions of things like IE or
Direct X. Yes, I know, why would anyone want to, but sometimes people have
very old equipment that won't handle the newer stuff and can't afford
upgrades.

Joan, I have the original M$ supplied CD's of Internet
Explorer/Outlook Express versions 5.0 and 5.5

I think both have a copy of DirectX on each that is a version of the
time the disks were released.

I would be more than happy to burn you a copy of one or the other or
both and snailmail them to you.....

I also have the original CD of Office 97 which runs real sweet on
older 98 machines with limited resources if you are interested.

Thanks, I have no need of it, it is others of whom I speak. I have CDs for
Win 95, Win 98 both upgrade and original and the SE upgrade CD. I just
occasionally hear people looking for these things. I did have a personal
experience with early obsolescence when the Voodoo video card that came in
my desktop caused lockups with IE, I think the version was 5.5. After
reading on this group that others had traced the problem to the video card I
was able to get Gateway to replace it with a newer card under my warranty.
The manufacturer of the card had sold off its business and no updated
drivers were available to cure the problem so the card had to be replaced.
This makes me sensitive to the complaints that newer software may not work
on older systems. Unfortunately, some people just don't have the resources
to buy new equipment. It's nice that technology advances so rapidly except
for those who are left in the dust.

There is also a web site out there that has the COMPLETE downloads of all
versions of IE back to 3.0, all versions of Netscape back to whenever, all
versions of Opera, plus Mozilla. Don't have its URL handy, but I used it to
snag some of the IE versions, which are no longer available from Micro$oft.
They provide the copies from their web site, not with potentially expired links
to other URLs... Ben Myers

Was this the site you were speaking of?

Very nice service to have all those downloads available.
